  • Queen of Tears blends comedy and sincerity seamlessly, creating memorable scenes that highlight the talents of the cast.

Queen of Tears is best known for its heavily emotional storyline, but there are also plenty of funny moments. Queen of Tears was initially billed as a romantic comedy, with the show’s trailer detailing some of the show’s laugh-out-loud moments thanks to the comedic brilliance of leading actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won. Although Queen of Tears takes a much more emotional toll than a regular romantic comedy, its funny moments are one big reason for Queen of Tears‘ overwhelming success.

Queen of Tears‘ writer Park Ji-eun has a proven track record when it comes to seeing success in a K-drama, and it’s partly to do with her use of comedy. Queen of Tears acts as Crash Landing on You‘s perfect replacement, with both shows becoming well known for their mix of comedy, romance, and emotion. Though their saddest moments will always be the standouts in the series, Queen of Tears manages to do what its predecessor did and use great moments of comedy to balance out some of its most tear-jerking scenes.

Actress Kim Ji-won gives an incredible performance in Queen of Tears, which is why I’m so excited for her next K-drama character after Hong Hae-in.

10 Hyun-woo Keeps Trying to Find A Raccoon Named Yong-suk (But It Isn’t Real)

Queen of Tears’ Hyun-woo Is Surprisingly Gullible

Some of Queen of Tears‘ best moments come in its epilogues. These epilogues often add more detail to the K-drama and shift perspectives with the revelation of new information. In episode 7, a heartbreaking scene revealed that Hae-in had begun to lose more of her memories thanks to her condition. However, the epilogue is endearing and shows a completely new side of Hae-in and Hyun-woo’s relationship that provides laughter that is very much needed.

This small moment adds a great new dynamic to Hae-in and Hyun-woo’s relationship that completely reverses the expectations of their characters. Until this point, Hae-in had been viewed as a stone-faced CEO while Hyun-woo’s brilliance as a lawyer who graduated from Seoul University is mentioned many times throughout the K-drama. However, this scene depicts Hae-in’s playful side as she fools a surprisingly gullible Hyun-woo into thinking there’s a raccoon on the roof of Queens Group. It’s a nice touch to their turbulent relationship that brings out a more light-hearted side that isn’t usually seen.

9 Hae-in Being Jealous Over Hyun-woo

Hyun-woo Provoking Her Jealously Makes The Scenes Even Better

Right from the very first episode, Hae-in makes it clear that her allegiances are with Hyun-woo, even if it takes them a while to clear the air themselves. As a result, one of Queen of Tears‘ best running jokes is Hae-in’s jealousy when it comes to other women looking at Hyun-woo. This first creeps up in episode 6 when Hae-in uses both Korean and English to tell a German woman to “Go away” after she fawns over Hyun-woo. However, episode 14 is where the heat is really turned up.

Though Hae-in’s jealousy in itself is funny, what makes episode 14’s scene even more memorable is how Hyun-woo provokes Hae-in’s reaction. Hyun-woo rolls up his sleeves, drinks espresso, and ensures all the women around him know that he is reading a newspaper in English. His intentions to provoke Hae-in may come from a place of hurt, as Hae-in refuses to get treatment for her illness, but Hae-in’s subtle yet aggravated reaction makes this scene a great one to watch.

8 Hyun-woo Buying Hae-in New Shoes

The Sequence Is Well-Delivered By Kim Soo-hyun

There are several moments in this scene in episode 4 that make it such a great dive into Hyun-woo’s psyche, while also showing Kim Soo-hyun’s talents as an actor. From the “Suzy” smile to the way he screams Hae-in’s name and hides after she trips, Kim Soo-hyun delivers each moment with great comic timing. He also acts with great detail to make the eventual reveal of Hyun-woo’s true feelings more apparent in hindsight.

The “Suzy” smile is named after the actress Bae Suzy, who demonstrated a smile she uses to flirt on
Jo Hyunah’s Thursday Night
. The strange smile, which involves showing her top teeth rather than smiling widely, quickly went viral after the show. Bae Suzy and Kim Soo-hyun previously starred in
Dream High
together, making Kim Soo-hyun’s use of the famed “Suzy” smile not only hilarious but a great nod to his former co-star.

The scenes Hyun-woo retells feel grandiose. Hae-in’s cold attitude is amplified as Hyun-woo puts on an overly sweet front in an attempt to win her over. The use of quick zooms as Hae-in falls highlights Hyun-woo’s thought process but also makes his eventual decision to hide even funnier. Like many of Queen of Tears‘ best scenes, this sequence ends on a bittersweet note as Hyun-woo realizes he still loves Hae-in, but the lead-up to getting there was certainly amusing.

7 Hae-in Embarasses Herself In Front Of Hyun-woo

Hae-in Proves That Even Chaebol’s Can Get Embarrassed, Too

If episode 4 showed some of Kim Soo-hyun’s comedic talents in a well-crafted comedy sequence, then episode 15 shows Kim Ji-won’s. In this sequence, Kim Ji-won proves that even chaebol heiresses like Hong Hae-in can feel embarrassed as she navigates Hae-in’s complicated feelings for Hyun-woo after losing her memory. Much like Kim Soo-hyun’s sequence in episode 4, these short scenes are peppered with several small moments that make the overall outcome well worth the watch.

Kim Ji-won makes Hae-in’s heavy internal struggle evident without seeming like too much, which ultimately anchors the scene as she tries to set boundaries with Hyun-woo. She has clearly practiced what to say to Hyun-woo beforehand, yet has to act cool when she realizes her bag was caught on a chair rather than Hyun-woo trying to stop her. Hae-in’s final expressions bring the sequence to a hilarious close as Kim Ji-won perfectly delivers just how mortified Hae-in is after the event.

6 Hae-in Reconsiders Hyun-woo’s Re-proposal

Kim Ji-won Really Sells Hae-in’s Childish Composure

It’s no secret that Hong Hae-in can be hard to understand. Her well-rehearsed cold exterior is tough to crack, especially when she is feeling more than she would like to admit. However, this scene in Queen of Tears episode 12 shows just how well Kim Ji-won understands her character as she allows Hae-in to show a more childish side while maintaining her well-practiced composure.

Kim Ji-won makes Hae-in’s change of heart feel like a breath of fresh air.

This scene comes shortly after an emotional re-proposal from Hyun-woo, which Hae-in declines through fears of her death hurting him. However, Kim Ji-won makes Hae-in’s change of heart feel like a breath of fresh air. She delivers her lines with a teenage-like approach that is unusual for her character but works so well for the moment. Contrasted with Hyun-woo’s pure delight, Hae-in’s blunt lies are a joy to watch, especially as Hae-in screams into a pillow like a child following the exchange.

5 Hae-in Treats Hyun-woo

This Scene Shows What Queen of Tears Does Best

One of the best things about Queen of Tears is how it blends comedy with sincerity to create scenes that ebb and flow nicely without feeling jarring. Hae-in treatment of Hyun-woo following a fight with a broker in episode 10 is a great example of this. Hae-in’s intense concern steers towards something funny as she strips Hyun-woo to examine him, with Hyun-woo assuring her that he is okay. This scene is initially amusing, especially with Hyun-woo’s facial expressions. However, there is much more to it than that.

Hae-in’s concern is very genuine as she fears for Hyun-woo’s safety. Although Hyun-woo doesn’t quite grasp this until the second half of the scene, it’s sincere when he does. However, Hyun-woo’s continual bragging about how he won the fight keeps the humor going throughout the scene, allowing the change of pace to feel a lot more natural, and making it another great hilarious addition to Queen of Tears.

4 Soo-cheol Speaking Chinese (Very Badly)

The Hong Family Going Undercover Is Iconic

Hong Soo-cheol (Kwak Dong-yeon) is Queen of Tears‘ comic relief character, even though he also goes through a similar amount of heartbreak as his older sister and her husband. As such, Kwak Dong-yeon’s comedic talents often shine through as he lifts the tone of Queen of Tears out of complete misery. One of his best scenes comes in episode 11, where he takes a wrong but strong approach to ensure that his family secures information before their rival, Mo Seul-hee (Lee Mi-sook).

Although Soo-cheol’s Chinese seemingly comes with great pronunciation and confidence, the realization that he is talking absolute nonsense is a golden moment.

The Hong Family’s initial choice to use the Clark Kent effect to mask their identities is a great look into the newfound solidarity between them, while also being secretly cool. However, as their investigation begins, a quick move from Grace (Kim Joo-ryung) means that Soo-cheol can only use Chinese rather than his native Korean. Although Soo-cheol’s Chinese seemingly comes with great pronunciation and confidence, the realization that he is talking absolute nonsense is a golden moment and one that perfectly sums up the Hong family’s dynamic and Soo-cheol’s role as the clueless youngest son.

3 Hae-in Slaps Soo-cheol

Hyun-woo’s Reaction Could Not Be More Perfect

Following their fall from grace in Queen of Tears episode 8, the Hong family is forced to go into hiding in Hyun-woo’s hometown of Yongdu-ri. As such, they have to deal with an entirely new lifestyle that is completely different from the life of luxury they are used to. This is a surefire recipe for comedy gold, and Queen of Tears certainly doesn’t disappoint with Hae-in and her younger brother, Soo-cheol, being front and center.

Though there are many scenes that show Soo-cheol and the other Hong family members trying to adjust to their new way of living, nothing quite matches the family dinner in episode 9. Kwak Dong-yeon makes Soo-cheol’s request for Fiji water over tap water seem reasonable before Hae-in snaps him back to reality with an aggressive slap and a scolding. As a standalone moment, this is very funny, especially considering everyone’s fearful reactions. However, it’s Hyun-woo’s “She doesn’t do that to me,” that really makes this scene a standout.

2 Hyun-woo Tries To Delete Texts From Hae-in’s Phone

This Scene Shows What Queen of Tears Could Have Been Like As A Comedy

Though Queen of Tears‘ saddest scenes are what made it an overwhelming success, it would have been interesting to see what Hae-in and Hyun-woo’s story could have been like if it leaned more into its comedic elements. Kim Ji-won and Kim Soo-hyun have proven their worth as natural comedians throughout their K-drama careers, with some of this being evident in Queen of Tears. One of their best comedic scenes together comes in episode 3, which shows what could have happened if these two leading actors were to make a comedy together.

It is very rare for Hong Hae-in to let loose and become drunk, and Kim Ji-won does a great job of portraying Hae-in’s drunken state without overdoing it. Opposite her, Kim Soo-hyun’s urgency and conflict is felt through every inch of the scene as he tries to navigate his difficult situation. However, what makes this scene stand out is the background music, which is easily likened to the Jaws theme and heightens the tensest moments of the scene in spectacular fashion.

1 Drunk Hyun-woo

Kim Soo-hyun Is A Great Comedian

When considering the emotional rollercoaster that Queen of Tears goes on, it’s unsurprising that one of its funniest moments comes in its first episode, as none of the dramatic undertones have been introduced yet. Kim Soo-hyun once again proves just how funny he can be as he portrays Hyun-woo’s woes through drunken wails. Though this scene is far from the first time Hyun-woo gets drunk and cries in Queen of Tears, it’s easily the most memorable as it’s full of detail.

This scene initially starts as a simple venting session between friends but quickly turns to show just how trapped Hyun-woo feels in his relationship. He has begun to hate the things that Hae-in loves about him and feels as if he cannot move thanks to the PIs who quite literally follow his every move. Queen of Tears does an excellent job of feeding in all of this information through an outstanding performance by Kim Soo-hyun, making it easily one of the romance K-drama’s funniest scenes.
