One Tree Hill: Watch It Or Skip It Episode Guide For All 9 Seasons

Summary

  • One Tree Hill’s
9 seasons had highs and lows, with iconic episodes like the pilot, weddings, funerals, and season finales worth watching.
  • Despite flaws in later seasons,
    One Tree Hill
has great character relationships and development and an influential soundtrack.
  • Some
    One Tree
episodes are must-watches, but those that feature frustrating relationships or odd storylines can be skipped.

One Tree Hill successfully ran for 9 seasons from 2003 to 2012, but with 187 episodes, not every single one is worth watching. Over One Tree Hill’s 9 seasons, there were many highs and lows in quality, with the series sometimes dipping into absurd storylines to try and keep things fresh. Though there were cast members who stuck around throughout the show’s entire run, One Tree Hill’s later seasons were flawed due to the major character exits of Peyton and Lucas.

While One Tree Hill is far from the perfect series, and not everything has aged well, it’s easily rewatchable. It’s hard not to get attached to the characters, their development, and their ever-changing relationships with each other. Beyond this, One Tree Hill had one of the most influential teen drama soundtracks, with famous musical guests often making surprise appearances at TRIC and Karen’s Café. One Tree Hill was never a bad series, but there were some not-so-great episodes.

Season 1 (2003-2004)

Number Of Episodes: 22

Episode 1, “Pilot” – Watch It: The One Tree Hill pilot is a must-watch. It establishes the characters and story and makes viewers want to watch more.

Episode 3, “Are You True?” – Watch It: Haley and Nathan have one of One Tree Hill’s best relationships, and it all began with her agreeing to tutor him in episode 3.

Episode 5, “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” – Watch It: The “Father and Son” basketball game was bound to cause tension and issues when Lucas asked his uncle Keith to play with him.

Episode 6, “Every Night Is Another Story” – Watch It: Lucas and Nathan start to see each other as true teammates and Haley, Peyton, and Brooke hang out for the first time.

Episode 7, “Life in a Glass House” – Watch It: Brooke is at her messiest in this episode, and while everyone loves her character development, watching her play the mean girl was fun.

Episode 9, “With Arms Outstretched” – Watch It: Viewers see Nathan’s vulnerable side for the first time. The love triangle between Lucas, Brooke, and Peyton starts to heat up.

Episode 10, “You Gotta Go There to Come Back” – Watch It: Gavin DeGraw’s One Tree Hill guest artist appearance and the reveal that Jake is a single teenage dad makes everything else worth it.

Episode 11, “The Living Years” – Skip It: The episode is directionless until the end when Nathan stands up to Dan and quits the basketball team.

Episode 12, “Crash Course in Polite Conversations” – Watch It: Lucas cheats on Brooke with Peyton for the first time and the Scott family dinner featuring Haley reveals major family secrets.

Episode 13, “Hanging by a Moment” – Skip It: Everyone’s relationship drama is overkill. Dramatically, the episode ends with Lucas flatlining during surgery after a car accident.

Episode 14, “I Shall Believe” – Watch It: The fighting from the last episode becomes worth it thanks to the emotional hospital scenes between Lucas, Nathan, and Haley.

Episode 15, “Suddenly Everything Has Changed” – Watch It: Lucas is at his worst here, but the scene where Brooke confronts him and Peyton about cheating is iconic.

One Tree Hill: The Worst Ship In Each Season

While there are many sweet love stories on One Tree Hill, there are just as many couples in every season of the show who really shouldn’t be together.

Episode 5, “I Will Dare” – Watch It: Felix’s “Dare Night” is ridiculous, but the hijinks are entertaining, and Anna is introduced as the far better Taggaro sibling.

Episode 6, “We Might as Well Be Strangers” – Watch It: Brooke’s methods to avoid going broke are overdramatic and entertaining, and, thanks to Mouth, the episode also features an incredibly sweet scene.

Episode 7, “Let the Reigns Go Loose” – Watch It: TRIC has its grand opening. Felix and Chris Keller are terrible, but Haley has her first public performance.

Episode 8, “Truth, Bitter Truth” – Watch It: The girls take center stage with Haley, Brooke, Peyton, and Anna having a sleepover. Lucas and Nathan take a difficult road trip together.

Episode 9, “The Trick Is to Keep Breathing” – Skip It: This is the true start of the insufferable marital problems between Nathan and Haley, which almost ruined One Tree Hill season 2.

Episode 10, “Don’t Take Me for Granted” – Skip It: The relationship drama should have taken a backseat to Peyton standing up against homophobia and Anna’s important coming out storyline.

Episode 11, “The Heart Brings You Back” – Watch It: Haley’s older sister, Taylor, is a problematic character. Viewers often love to hate her, and her first episode explains why.

Episode 12, “Between Order and Randomness” – Skip It: The problems Taylor causes for Nathan and Haley are matched only by the ones that Haley herself is creating.

Episode 13, “The Hero Dies in This One” – Skip It: Haley makes a nearly unforgivable decision, leaving Nathan behind. It’s frustrating and hard to stomach.

Haley was briefly written out of
One Tree Hill
because actor Bethany Joy Lenz was performing on the “One Tree Hill Tour.”

Episode 14, “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” – Skip It: Nathan starts spiraling with Haley gone, and Brooke’s student body president election isn’t nearly as interesting as One Tree Hill wants it to be.

Episode 15, “Unopened Letter to the World” – Watch It: Tree Hill High makes the students do a time capsule project, leading to some interesting confessions that weren’t supposed to be leaked.

Episode 17, “Something I Can Never Have” – Watch It: Nathan’s desperate attempt to win Haley back is difficult but necessary. Felix finally gets his due and Jake fights with Nicki for custody of Jenny.

Episode 18, “The Lonesome Road” – Skip It: Heartbroken Nathan makes even more bad decisions, and there are no happy endings for Peyton and Jake, who deserved so much better.

Episode 19, “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” – Watch It: Viewers meet another controversial character, Uncle Cooper (Deb’s younger brother) for the first time, and Nathan hits rock bottom.

Episode 20, “Lifetime Piling Up” – Skip It: Nathan’s imaginary One Tree Hill world feels completely wrong. Things somehow get even worse between Nathan and Haley.

Episode 21, “What Could Have Been” – Skip It: Relationship drama is One Tree Hill season 2’s downfall, and episode 21 has more than enough of it.

Episode 22, “The Tide That Left and Never Come Back” – Watch It: This is the start of a two-part season finale full of plot twists and major changes.

Episode 23, “The Leaves Dance” – Watch It: The second part of the finale is even more shocking than the first, with the cliffhanger ending making the messy season worthwhile.

One Tree Hill: 10 Most Relatable Storylines On The Show

While sometimes young adult drama One Tree Hill can be wild and over-the-top, these plotlines are easy to relate to and feel very honest.

Episode 13, “The Other Half of Me” – Watch It: After seasons of heartbreak, Brooke gets her happy ending when she marries Julian. It’s One Tree Hill’s happiest wedding by far.

because Bethany Joy Lenz was pregnant.

Episode 18, “Quiet Little Voice” – Watch It: Haley and Joy experience the joy of having their second child, while Brooke suffers another parenting heartbreak.

Episode 19, “Where Not to Look for Freedom” – Skip It: After a couple of episodes with everyone together, the character spends too much time going in separate directions.
