are worth a lot of bells, making them valuable catches. - Fishing is important for completing in-game tasks, earning bells, and participating in events like the fishing tourney.
- Players can catch rare and valuable fish like the Coelacanth, Sturgeon, Blue Marlin, and more.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a total of 80 fish that players can catch, and some fish are much larger than others. The simplest way to tell a fish’s size is by the shadow they leave in the water; small fish will cast a small shadow, while the biggest fish available in the game will cast the biggest shadow. Finding the bigger and rarer fish takes patience, as certain conditions must be met in order to be caught, which means some players may spend hours or days searching for a single one. The good news is, some of these big and rare fish will be worth a lot of bells.
Fishing is a necessity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for players trying to complete their museum. However, it is also a fun pastime for players wanting to earn extra bells or make fish trophies to use as decorations. There is also the Animal Crossing fishing tourney with fun extras in prizes and goals to complete. From the ocean, rivers, lakes, and ponds, there are plenty of fish that can be found in the game, with some fish only available during certain times of the year. Finding these fish will depend on the season and time of day to catch them.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Rarest Fish Is The Coelacanth
Sea Fish, Available On Rainy Days All Year
The coelacanth casts one of the largest shadows in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. A salt-water fish described by Blathers as being around since “the age of the dinosaurs,” this fish is a living fossil. It is extremely rare and will not appear at all for a player until the requirement of 100 total fish has been caught on the island, so new players will need to wait a bit before they can hope to find one.
This catchable fossil is one of the fish in ACNH that is worth the most, being valued at 15,000 Bells in Nooks Cranny and 22,500 Bells when sold to C.J. The coelacanth is available all day and night year-round in the ocean, but it has to be raining for this fish to spawn, and it is extremely rare, making the coelacanth hard to catch. The price and rarity of this fish make it a popular fish in ACNH.
Look In The Mouth Of The River For A Big Sturgeon
River Mouth Fish, Available September Through March
Sturgeon are some of the largest river fish and one of the few that will only spawn in the mouth of the river, where the river meets the ocean and is slightly wider. Sturgeon, salmon, and king salmon are the only three fish that can be found at this location. It is the largest of the three, with its shadow being a good deal bigger than the others, making it easier to spot, although other fish can appear in the area as well.
The sturgeon will not appear in Animal Crossing: New Horizons unless the player has already caught at least 20 fish and is a rare find. Thankfully, it is available all day without time restrictions. In the Northern Hemisphere, it can be seen between September and March, and the Southern Hemisphere will have it the rest of the year, from March to September. If sold to Nook’s Cranny, the sturgeon is valued at 10,000 Bells, although C.J. will pay 15,000 Bells for it.
A Blue Marlin Will Cast A Large Shadow All Day Long
Pier Fish, Available November Through April And July Through September
The blue marlin is an ocean fish that is a bit further out at sea, therefore requiring players to fish from the pier in order to catch them. These large creatures have a memorable snout, featuring a long pointed end at the front that is used like a spear to attack prey. Blathers informs players that it is a relative to the tuna and has even been known to fight with whales despite only having an average size in ACNH of 78.95 inches.
Players hoping to reel in a blue marlin will not only be limited to the pier but also are advised to pay attention to the month. In the Northern Hemisphere, this fish is found from November through April and again from July through September. Likewise, the Southern Hemisphere has blue marlin from January through March and again from May through October. It can be sold to Nook’s Cranny for 10,000 Bells or to C.J. for 15,000 Bells.
An Animal Crossing Tuna Is Not Just For Sandwiches
Pier Fish, Available November Through April
Tuna have been in all Animal Crossing games since Wild World and are another example of a rare ocean fish that requires someone to fish from the pier if they have any hope of catching one. When caught, characters joke, “It’s a little off-key”, referring to the similar-sounding tune. Blathers explains that it never stops swimming, even continuing to swim while asleep. The large tuna has an average size in ACNH of 90.6 inches.
Although limited to only being caught when fished from the pier, the tuna is at least available all day long. In the Northern Hemisphere, tuna can be found between November and April, while the Southern Hemisphere will see them between May and November. When sold to Nook’s Cranny, the tuna is valued at 7,000 Bells, although C.J. will buy it for 10,500 Bells.

Animal Crossing Players With 500 Hours Playtime Are Only Just Realizing How Fishing Really Works
After four years and over 500 hours, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players are finally discovering how fishing really works in the game.
A Hammerhead Shark Isn’t Worth As Much As Other Sharks, But Is A Large Find
Sea Fish, Available June Through September
While most of the sharks in ACNH are the biggest in the game, the hammerhead shark is a bit smaller than some of its friends, coming in with an average size of 108.40 inches. This still casts the largest size of shadow, however, and has the iconic shark fin sticking out of the water. When donated to the museum, Blathers shares the information that “this oddly shaped head allows the beast to see 360 degrees around itself, from top to bottom.”
Hammerhead sharks are found in the ocean, like all sharks, and are only seen after the player has caught at least 20 fish in the game. In the Northern Hemisphere, they are found from June through September, and in the Southern Hemisphere from December through March. They are night fish, being available from 4 pm to 9 am, and can be sold to Nooks Cranny for 8,000 Bells or to C.J. for 12,000 Bells.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Arapaima Is Big River Fish
River Fish, Available June Through September
A freshwater fish found in rivers; the arapaima is the largest river fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as in the real world. It is another very rare fish that the player may spend hours and days searching for without much success, but that can add to the feeling of triumph once the large fish has been caught. In ACNH, the arapaima measures an average of 118.11 inches. Interestingly, the arapaima breathes air and sticks their head out of the water in order to breathe.
An arapaima is hard to find but can be available in the summer from 4 PM to 9 AM. In the Northern Hemisphere, from June through September, and in the Southern Hemisphere, it can be found December through March. However, the arapaima will not be found by new players, as someone has to have caught at least 50 fish before it even spawns. It is the second most expensive freshwater fish in the game, valued at 10,000 Bells in Nooks Cranny and 15,000 Bells when sold to C.J.
ACNH’s Ocean Sunfish Is A Gentle Giant And One Of The Biggest Fish To Catch
Sea Fish, Available July Through September
Many of the large fish are found during the late summer seasons, such as the ocean sunfish which appears between July and September for the Northern Hemisphere or January through March for the Southern Hemisphere. Like many sharks, it is one of the summer fish that has a fin protruding from the water. Despite having that ominous fin and casting a very large shadow, Blathers describes the ocean sunfish as being a “fairly relaxed species” and it measures an average of 135 inches.
This ocean-loving fish can only be caught during the day from 4 am to 9 pm. It can be good for making money, as the ocean sunfish is fairly easy to catch, but it is not very expensive. Players will get 4,000 Bells for them in Nooks Cranny and 6,000 Bells from C.J.

The Biggest Fish In Animal Crossing: New Horizons Are Sharks, Like The Great White Shark
Sea Fish, Available June Through September
The largest fish available in ACNH are often the sharks. The great white, hammerhead, and whale shark all cast very large and noticeable shadows with their fins sticking out of the water. The great white shark in the game measures an average size of 214.25 inches, and certainly looks impressive as the most iconic of all sharks. Many people picture the great white when they think of sharks, helping to make this a favorite catch of many players.
Prior to New Horizons, the great white shark was simply called “shark” in Animal Crossing games. This ocean beast can be caught in the Northern Hemisphere from June through September and the Southern Hemisphere from December to March. It is only available between the hours of 4 pm to 9 am and will not spawn for a player until after they have caught at least 50 fish. A great white can be sold to Nooks Cranny for 15,000 Bells or to C.J. for 22,500 Bells.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Sea Serpent Look-Alike Oarfish
Sea Fish, Available December Through May
The second-largest fish and one of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ weirdest fish is the oarfish. Found in the ocean, the oarfish is one of the creepiest looking fish in the game. Its long and slim body shape resembles a sea monster, and it is fitting this fish is one of the largest fish players can catch. Blathers even says this fish can supposedly reach “36 feet in length.” and it has an average of 230 inches.
The oarfish is an ocean find, and is available in the Northern Hemisphere from December to May, and in the Southern Hemisphere, it is found from June to November. It is available all day and has no specific weather conditions to catch. Animal Crossing: New Horizons Players can sell this fish for 9,000 Bells in Nooks Cranny, and 13,500 Bells when sold to C.J.

The Whale Shark Is World’s Largest Fish, Both In Real Life And In ACNH
Sea Fish, Available December Through March
A whale shark is the largest fish in the real world, so it makes sense that Animal Crossing stayed true to that fact and made it the largest fish in the game as well, coming in at an average size of 275 inches. Disappointingly, when made into a model, it is actually very small, although all of Flick’s models are relatively small. However, for the largest fish in the world, it seems like the model could have been at least a bit larger to match.
The whale shark is found in the Northern Hemisphere from June through September and in the Southern Hemisphere from December through March. It is a rare ocean catch despite being available all day without any weather conditions. Selling the whale shark will get 13,000 Bells from Nooks Cranny or 19,500 Bells from C.J. This impressive fish is the biggest fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
