Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher was disappointing, but the British actor has lots of projects lined up that could fill that gap. The 2019 TV show adapted Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher publications, also drawing from the popular video game series. Following Cavill’s exit from The Witcher, Liam Hemsworth will lead the show as Geralt of Rivia. While Cavill’s portrayal of the White Wolf will likely remain one of the actor’s most iconic characters for years to come, some of his upcoming roles resemble Geralt more than others

Henry Cavill’s Geralt was one of the best things about the Netflix show, which is why it will be interesting to see what The Witcher season 4 will look like. While the series has been one of Netflix’s most successful titles since its premiere, The Witcher has had highs and lows. Regardless, Cavill’s exit from the show opened up several exciting opportunities for the actor. While Cavill’s return as Superman did not work out following the announcement of a DC Universe reboot ahead of James Gunn’s Superman, the actor has some exciting projects coming up that could lead to franchises.

7 The Rosie Project

Cavill Was Cast In An Australian Drama

A mention of The Rosie Project must be included in any reckoning of what is next for Henry Cavill. Deadline reported in 2021 that Cavill had been cast for the drama movie, which will adapt an Australian novel about a man with relationship trouble. Cavill is set to play Don Tillman in the funny romance, which will be based on the book by Graeme Simsion. Tillman is the lead role in the plot and will be seeking his ideal wife in the flick, which will be directed by Steve Falke.

Representing a step away from fantasy, The Rosie Project may be marking Cavill’s desire to expand his repertoire and avoid typecasting as a fantasy hero. Nonetheless, this leading role will hit the romantic and comedic notes that Geralt often hit in The Witcher. Those who enjoyed Cavill’s Geralt may well be interested in this movie, which could lead into a franchise considering there are three books in the series.

6 Enola Holmes

Henry Cavill Plays Sherlock Holmes

Henry Cavill played timeless detective Sherlock Holmes in the 2020 mystery movie Enola Holmes and its sequel Enola Holmes 2. He is expected to return for the upcoming movie Enola Holmes 3. Cavill joined a pantheon of legends to represent Holmes, a character from British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock books. Released at the turn of the century, Holmes first appeared in print in 1887 and last appeared in print in 1927, establishing the classic character that Cavill would inhabit.

The detective spawned a British TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and also Guy Ritchie movies starring Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role. These two huge franchises couldn’t take the wind out of Enola Holmes’ sails, which provided an original take on the characters. Cavill’s return will ensure the continuation of Enola Holmes’ fresh take on the character, while the hero Holmes is an apt complement to Cavill’s role as Geralt. Naturally, Sherlock is not the main character in the Enola Holmes films, but he plays an important role in the franchise.

5 Squadron 42

Cavill Will Feature In The Single-Player Game

Cavill will star in the upcoming video game Squadron 42, providing a potential point of interest for fans of The Witcher game, which Cavill helped to paint on TV as Geralt. Henry Cavill told GQ how “at home, [he gets] to sit playing games for ridiculous amounts of hours and escape,” discussing his approach to gameplay and making his status as a video game nerd abundantly clear. This shines through in his commitment to gaming projects.

Cavill will voice commander Ryan Enright in the game, which will also feature voice talent from Andy Serkis and John Rhys-Davies. This huge lineup will make Squadron 42 a big release, although there is currently no release date announced. Squadron 42 will follow a Navy combat pilot in the Star Citizen universe, leaning into Cavill’s fantasy and sci-fi experience. While not a movie or TV show, Cavill voicing and doing the motion capture performance for a sci-fi video game sounds exciting.

4 Highlander

The Fantasy Reboot Springs From A Cult Hit

Henry Cavill will play the lead in an upcoming reboot of Highlander. 1986’s cult movie Highlander starred Sean Connery as the Egyptian immortal Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez and Christopher Lambert as 16th century immortal Connor MacLeod. Highlander was a commercial flop but triggered numerous sequels and TV spinoffs, creating the sandpit that Cavill will soon play in.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter and referring to his future role in Highlander, Cavill confirmed that fans who enjoyed his sword skills in The Witcher “haven’t seen anything.” As such, fantasy aficionados who are missing Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia should keep an eye out for Highlander. It is sure to bring Cavill’s sword-swinging expertise, which was developed as Cavill did many of his own stunts in The Witcher, back to the screen.

3 In The Grey

Cavill Will Join Forces With Guy Ritchie Again

Cavill will act in a Guy Ritchie movie coming up called In The Grey, feeding those who liked his action-packed sequences as Geralt in The Witcher. Cavill’s work with Guy Ritchie already included playing CIA agent Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which was received well critically. Cavill also played a fictionalized version of Gus March-Phillips in Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

As such, Cavill and Ritchie’s strong partnership bodes well for his appearance in In The Grey, which will follow a group of people looking for a stolen fortune. Cavill will star alongside Jake Gyllenhall in this movie, ensuring that In The Grey is one of the more exciting blockbusters in the works. Even if does not become a franchise, it is an exciting action role for Henry Cavill.

2 Wolverine

Cavill Appeared In Deadpool & Wolverine

Henry Cavill’s inspired appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine could be the start of something bigger, but if it remains his only Wolverine appearance, it will still go down in superhero history as an iconic moment. The movie incorporated Cavill after he was dropped as Superman and had Deadpool hilariously comment that Marvel would treat Cavill better than DC. Director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds have so far addressed Cavill’s appearance as Wolverine as nothing but a fun cameo that played with his legacy as a different hero. That said, Henry Cavill as Wolverine had been a popular fancast for years.

Cavill suffered for his art in Deadpool & Wolverine, portraying the Cigar-loving Wolverine with lung-busting realness. Keeping the cigar in his mouth all day helped Cavill arrive at his epic Cavillrine. Cavillrine would be a more than apt replacement for Geralt if he ever appears again in the MCU. It is unclear what is next for Logan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe considering Hugh Jackman returned for Deadpool & Wolverine, but if a proper recast ever happens, Henry Cavill would be a fantastic choice as the fan-favorite X-Men character.

Cavill Is Involved In The Game Adaptation

Henry Cavill is developing an on-screen adaptation of Warhammer 40k, the Warhammer game with a science fantasy setting which may well please Witcher fans. Henry Cavill’s passion for gaming, and Warhammer in particular, has been well documented. If anyone could lead this live-action adaptation to greatness, it would be Cavill. Cavill posted on Instagram showcasing his Warhammer hobby, proving his fantasy credentials once again:

It was recently reported that the Warhammer 40k adaptation was facing a setback over creative differences between Games Workshop and Amazon (via IGN). For the project to move forward, an agreement will reportedly have to be reached by December 2024. Cavill already appears in the Total War: Warhammer 2 game as Cavill, Loremaster of Hoeth. If everything works out, Warhammer has the potential to be Henry Cavill’s next big franchise after Superman and The Witcher.

The Witcher

Based on the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and the video games, The Witcher follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. “Ciri” Cirilla is the Princess of Cintra, who has magical abilities and whose fate has been linked to Geralt’s. Yennefer of Vengerberg, a sorceress who trains to become a mage before deserting her duties and going solo, is also a main character in the Netflix series. The show’s storylines are intertwined but told throughout different timelines, all of which eventually catch up to Ciri’s, whose timeline of events is the most recent. Set on the Continent where men, monsters, and elves exist together, the characters all have separate journeys, though their destinies bring them into each others’ orbits.
