The off-beat animated sitcom Solar Opposites has delivered the extraterrestrial laughs for five seasons thus far, and the series is already renewed.

10 The Pupa’s New Reading Habits

Episode 1

In the world of Solar Opposites, The Pupa is meant to resemble a toddler mentally, although its role in the terraforming of Earth makes it the most vital member of the Opposites’ crew. Despite this, The Pupa has become immensely invested in Earth culture since arriving on the planet, with it frequently being seen watching TV and playing with toys in previous seasons. However, The Pupa takes a more intellectual turn in season 5, with it being frequently seen reading leftist literature.

Starting in Solar Opposites season 5, episode 1, The Pupa can be seen reading these types of books, with it having a copy of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. This joke recurs throughout the seasons, with The Pupa being seen reading books by authors like Noam Chomsky. The Pupa’s choice of reading never plays into any of the main Solar Opposites storylines, leaving it as a hilariously niche non-sequitur gag.

9 Jesse’s The Bear Obsession

Episode 1

Of the Solar Opposites crew members, Jesse is the one who is most obsessed with TV and movies, with her having gained a new obsession in season 5: The Bear. FX and Hulu’s The Bear is one of the most popular shows that is currently running, so for someone who is up-to-date on TV, it makes sense that Jesse would be a fan. At one point, she says that she learned to cook by watching The Bear, and she can later be seen wearing an outfit similar to Sydney’s The Bear outfit while she is cooking.

This gag gets even better when Jesse explains how she watched The Bear. Since Solar Opposites season 5 started out on a different planet, Jesse had to watch the show while away from Earth. She explains this by saying that she watched the FX show on Hulu as part of a new intergalactic Disney+ bundle plan, poking fun at the show’s parent company and its convoluted streaming packages.

Solar Opposites season 5 is coming and here is everything known about it, including recent news, the cast, and the possible story.

8 The Na’vi Exist In Solar Opposites

Episode 1

Much like its sister show Rick and Morty, most of the alien species in Solar Opposites are completely original. These wacky alien species often sport incredibly unique and interesting designs, with then always towing the line between cute and disturbing. However, Solar Opposites season 5 also utilized an existing alien species by confirming that it exists in the Solar Opposites universe: the Na’vi.

While trying to find another planet that is habitable near the end of Solar Opposites season 5’s premiere, the gang is presented with two options. One of these options is a planet that is incredibly similar to Pandora, with images showing wildlife and scenery that is incredibly similar to what is found in James Cameron’s Avatar films. It is even mentioned that the Na’vi populate this Pandora planet, although the Opposites end up choosing the second option: Earth.

7 Jesse’s Ready Player One Obsessed Boyfriend

Episode 5

One of the most common running jokes throughout Solar Opposites has to do with Jesse’s various boyfriends, with her seemingly getting a new boyfriend almost anytime her relationship status is mentioned. This is even further fleshed out in season 5, episode 5, in which Korvo and Terry are kidnapped on a remote island populated by Jesse’s ex-boyfriends. Jesse has a new boyfriend in this episode as well, but he is the show’s oddest yet.

Besides Jesse’s new boyfriend being a streamer, he has the odd quirk of constantly quoting the 2018 movie Ready Player One. Even in his first scene, he references things like Halliday’s Easter eggs and the OASIS, implying that he is a Ready Player One superfan. This seemingly has no connection to anything, making it so bizarre that it becomes funny.

6 Korvo’s Costumes

Episode 6

Solar Opposites season 5, episode 6 sees Korvo find a new rivalry with the father of Yumyulack’s school bully. Korvo becomes infuriated when he hears that his rival believes that he can beat him up, leading Korvo to use all kinds of sci-fi gadgets in order to best the man. However, Korvo still always loses, leading to him going to his secret arsenal of sci-fi weaponry, which includes a few Solar Opposites costume Easter eggs.

In Korvo’s arsenal, he has three costumes, each of which references a different pop culture icon. The first of these is a Doctor Strange costume, resembling the character’s Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation. The next one is a Stillsuit from the Dune franchise. The final costume is one that resembles McDonald’s Hamburglar mascot. It is never explained why any of these costumes are useful, but they are funny background gags.

5 The SilverCops Starship Troopers Storyline

Episode 9

The SilverCops storyline returns in Solar Opposites season 5, and it is entirely centered around a parody of a notoriously divisive sci-fi movie. This season, the SilverCops story is a parody of the film Starship Troopers, Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 satire on fascism and war propaganda. Much like the film, the SilverCops storyline follows a band of soldiers who are tasked with wiping out a seemingly feral alien species, with the characters essentially being canon fodder that are uncared for by the larger war machine.

The SilverCops storyline’s costumes are one of the biggest giveaways that it is referencing Starship Troopers, with the silver armor and helmets directly paralleling the movie. On top of that, the way that Solar Opposites presents its alien pony combatants is incredibly similar to the way that Starship Troopers presents its Bugs, furthering this connection.

4 The SilverCops My Little Pony Villains

Episode 9

Throughout Solar Opposites season 5, the SilverCops train to fight the Scourge, who are presented as horrifying horse-like monsters who are soulless, have sharp teeth, pointed tails, and glowing red eyes. This is used as propaganda to dehumanize the Scourge, with the SilverCops troops being told that the Scourge are spreading throughout the galaxy and wiping out civilizations.

Upon meeting the Scourge, however, it is revealed that they are nothing like how they were presented. Instead, the Scourge actually are incredibly similar to the titular animals from My Little Pony, with their colored fur and hair making them almost identical parodies. The leader of a band of Scourge is even named Buttercup, following a similar naming convention to many of the ponies. The Scourge also fight by shooting out rainbows, hilariously juxtaposing the innocent characters with a violent war.

3 The NoHo Hank Funko Pop

Episode 10

Solar Opposites season 5 also heavily focuses on The Backyard storyline, a continuation of The Wall story from previous seasons. After season 4, many of the inhabitants of The Wall escaped into The Backyard, using toys, tools, and other discarded items to set up a Wild West civilization behind the Opposites’ house. One of the most commonly referred to landmarks in The Backyard is a strange one, as it is a NoHo Hank Funko Pop.

Throughout The Backyard storyline, it is explained that the NoHo Hank Funko Pop is a major icon of The Backyard, with it formerly belonging to Terry. As it turns out, Terry threw it out when the HBO series Barry became a drama instead of a comedy, which is a hilarious jab at the critically acclaimed HBO series.

2 The Gonzo PEZ Dispenser

Episode 10

Another frequently seen piece of The Backyard is a Gonzo PEZ dispenser. This PEZ dispenser is incredibly important to the lore of The Wall and The Backyard, although Solar Opposites doesn’t explicitly explain why. Way back in Solar Opposites season 2, Cheri was the protagonist of The Wall storyline, with her having escaped into The Backyard.

The pregnant hero eventually took refuge in the disposed Gonzo PEZ dispenser, with it providing her with the shelter she needed to give birth to her daughter. Due to the PEZ dispenser’s importance to Cheri, she decided to name her daughter Pezlie, after the candy dispenser. Bringing the Gonzo PEZ dispenser back adds a nice layer of continuity to the episode, even if audiences aren’t reminded why it is important.

1 Terry’s Rivalry With The Edge

Episode 11

The final pop culture joke that is one of season 5’s 10 funniest comes in the final episode of Solar Opposites season 5, with that being Terry’s rivalry with The Edge. The Edge is a British musician who was part of the band U2, and although he has had no role in Solar Opposites yet, his character is a major player in the season 5 finale due to him having a rivalry with Terry.

Although the story happens entirely offscreen, nearly every scene that Terry is in features him ranting about his hatred for The Edge and their various rivalries from throughout their past. By the end of the episode, however, they have made up, with Terry even wearing a costume similar to that of The Edge’s. The Edge is never seen in the episode, which is why this Solar Opposites season 5 joke is so hilarious.
