Sleeping through chronic hip pain is a challenge in and of itself. Finding the right mattress that can accommodate your sleeping position and provide excellent pressure relief can be a difficult undertaking. Luckily, CNET’s team of sleep experts has found the best mattress for hip pain to give you a restful sleep and avoid hip discomfort.
After testing and reviewing hundreds of mattresses, we’ve rounded up the top six beds that should help relieve pressure on your hip joints while getting quality sleep. These mattresses should also help if you have shoulder or other joint pain. We narrowed down the mattresses offering excellent pressure relief while considering sleeping position, feel, versatility, cooling features and pricing.
If you don’t have the budget for a brand new mattress but need an extra layer of comforting pressure relief on your current bed, consider adding one of our favorite mattress toppers.
What’s the best mattress for hip pain?
Our team spent hours testing and sleeping on dozens of mattresses to choose the top picks for this list. When selecting a bed to help accommodate a chronic health condition, we always recommend talking to your doctor or a health professional before making a significant change, such as switching up your mattress. We’re not doctors, just expert mattress reviewers.
For this specific list, we mainly considered how pressure-relieving they are. We also looked at any additional features the mattress has, such as targeted or zoned support.
Plenty of online beds strike a nice balance of cushion and support, but the one our team always comes back to is the Casper Dream Max Hybrid. As someone with shoulder pain, I’ve found this bed to be comfortable and pressure-relieving enough to help alleviate the pain while still being supportive with its zone support technology.

Best mattresses for hip pain in 2024
Our take – The Casper Dream Max is part of Casper’s recently launched line of new mattresses. Since its firmness profile is around medium-soft, it commonly makes our list of the best beds for side sleepers and many of our pain-related best lists.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Softer Zoned Support for hip and shoulder pain
- Hybrid construction is suitable for all body types
- Medium-soft is great for side sleepers
Cons
- Not the most affordable online option
- Strict back and stomach sleepers will need a firmer bed
The Dream Max has a system of seven support zones designed to ease pressure points while promoting proper spinal alignment. This mattress has a firmer center foam layer and a layer of memory foam with precisely cut grooves that cradle your body’s natural curves, allowing your shoulders and hips to sink in comfortably, helping by offering some hip pain relief. It has a soft, neutral feel that many sleepers will enjoy.
If you’re interested in this bed but it’s out of your budget, check out the Dream Hybrid. With a medium firmness profile, it’s slightly firmer than the Dream Max but is offered at a lower price tag. Keep in mind that the brand frequently offers discounts that bring the prices down quite a bit, especially around holidays.

Our take – If you’re looking for a more traditional mattress style to accommodate hip and shoulder pain, this is the bed for you. If buying a bed made in the US is also important to you, then it’s worth mentioning that this quality mattress is handcrafted out of Wisconsin. It has coils and supportive foam to provide heavier people with lots of pushback.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Supportive hybrid mattress should support all body types
- Four firmness levels accommodate different preferences
- Softer option should help alleviate chronic pain
Cons
- Not the most affordable online mattress compared to other mattresses with similar features
- Petite people or people under 180 pounds may not need added support
It’s available in four different firmness options, but for this specific list, we recommend the “softer” model, as it will provide the most pressure relief for your hips at night. Being a pillow-top bed, it has a pillow-top feel and feels like a bed you’d sleep on in a fancy hotel. It may even remind you of a bed you grew up sleeping on.
The WinkBed ranges from twin to Cal king for $1,149 to $2,049 before discounts. WinkBeds typically offers heavy cash discounts on its beds all year.

Our take – Sometimes, you need a bed that is versatile to accommodate an ever-changing health condition. The Layla Hybrid is a flippable memory foam mattress with a different firmness level on either side. If your hip pain flares up, you can flip the mattress to the soft side and back to the firm side whenever you see fit.

Type
flippable memory foam mattress
Firmness
soft: medium-soft, 3 / firm: medium to medium-firm, 5-7
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Flippable mattress with two firmnesses in one bed
- Pressure relieving for side sleepers with hip pain
- Great value for a bed of this quality
Cons
- Heavier people (over 250 pounds) might want a more supportive hybrid mattress
- Strict back and stomach sleepers might want a firmer option
As I mentioned, the “soft” side will be the most pressure-relieving side for hip pain as it’s around a proper medium-soft. If you flip it over to the firm side, it’s between medium and medium-firm. Either way, you have two firmnesses in one bed to experiment with, and both feature the same type of responsive memory foam feel. This feel conforms to your body, offering a nice amount of give without any “stuck” feeling you’d find in more slow-responding traditional memory foam beds.
The Layla mattress comes in twin to California king and ranges from $749 to $1,249. That’s great value for a flippable online mattress, especially before any discounts.

Our take – The beds I’ve talked about so far can be expensive, depending on the size you need. If you’re looking for a more affordable option to help with hip pain at night, the baseline bed from Nolah might be your best bet.

Firmness
medium to medium-firm, 5-7
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Ideal for supporting average-sized people
- Pressure-relieving material for hip pain
- Affordable option after discount
Cons
- Heavier people may want a more supportive hybrid bed
- Strict side sleepers may want a softer option
- Back and stomach sleepers might want something firmer
It’s a simple three-layer all-foam bed, so it’s ideal for small or average-sized people, and it sits right around a medium on our scale. The top layer of the bed is Nolah’s special “AirFoam,” which gives the mattress a blended foam feel. It offers a good amount of pressure relief, similar to a memory foam mattress, with the responsiveness of a neutral foam. This material gives the bed a unique balance of comfort for those who suffer from hip pain, and it’s not bad on price, either.
The Nolah Original 10-inch mattress is available in twin to split king sizes and costs between $999 and $2,398. As a brand, Nolah usually offers heavy discounts on its products, even offering free products with every mattress purchase.

Our take – The AS5 is the softest mattress from Amerisleep. It’s available in two support options: all-foam and hybrid versions. Its softer firmness profile and responsive memory foam feel give it plenty of pressure relief for those who suffer from hip or shoulder pain.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Support options for all body types
- Pressure relieving for strict side sleepers
- Responsive memory foam conforms to alleviate hip pain
Cons
- Back and stomach sleepers might want a firmer bed
- Not the most affordable option compared to similar beds
Since it’s so soft, we’d only recommend it for strict side sleepers looking for something truly plush. If you want a firmer version of the same bed, it could be worth looking at Amerisleep’s AS2 or AS3 beds. If having a soft bed is a top priority for you, this bed is an excellent consideration for your online mattress search. Not to mention, it comes with a cover that’s supposed to help keep you seven degrees cooler throughout the night.
It ranges from twin to split king and ranges from $2,099 to $3,848. It’s not the most affordable online option, but Amerisleep usually offers nice promotions on its mattresses and sleep accessories.

- Helix Sleep quiz makes finding the right bed easier

The brand’s online sleep quiz is one of the main reasons Helix made the list. The quiz pinpoints the right Helix mattress for you based on the answers you submit, and it even accounts for whether or not you suffer from chronic pain. Altogether, it’s a fun and easy way of finding a mattress tailored to your health condition(s).

At CNET, our sleep experts have tested and reviewed hundreds of online beds, dedicating countless hours to growing our expertise. The beds chosen for this list were the main standouts for our team, but if you want to check out some others, here are a few to consider regarding nightly hip pain.
Layla Hybrid: This is essentially the Layla mattress, but it has pocketed coils instead of foam for support. It’s also double-sided and features a responsive memory foam feel. If you’re a bit heavier and suffer from hip pain, the “soft” side of the Layla Hybrid might be the way to go since it’s right around medium-soft on our scale. The firm side is also softer than the original Layla’s around a medium, which might be better for all sleep styles.
Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid: This is the most popular and accommodating bed from Nest Bedding. It’s a pillow-top mattress with an almost cloud-like level of comfort. I’d say it should accommodate most people with hip pain, particularly on the “plush” firmness level. The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid comes with a lifetime renewal exchange, where you can get a replacement top comfort foam one time during the bed’s lifespan. This means the mattress will last you for years to come.

For this list, we mainly focus on finding beds with lots of cushioning and ample pressure relief. Hip pain usually occurs at night while our hips dig into mattresses while sleeping on our side. A mattress with tons of pressure relief is crucial for reducing nightly hip pain.
We also considered different mattress feels that could help alleviate chronic hip pain. Mattresses with a memory foam feel can contour to the shape of your body and help accommodate hip pain a bit more than your average bed. Having a supportive mattress is also essential for chronic health conditions.

Pressure relief: The best mattresses for hip pain provide plenty of cushion without sacrificing support. If you’re primarily a side sleeper, a softer bed with more pressure relief will cradle your hips more and alleviate pain in that area of the body.
Firmness: Plush mattresses are more pressure-relieving than firm ones. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, you’ll probably want something on the firmer side (just not too firm). Firmness is subjective based on your weight.
Weight: Speaking of weight, this factor can apply to people with hip pain. If you’re a heavier person, you’ll want a hybrid mattress that offers plenty of support. Smaller-sized folks can get away with sleeping on an all-foam bed, and more average-sized people can probably go either way. If you weigh over 200 pounds, you may want to go the route of a hybrid bed.
Health concerns: If you have a chronic health condition like hip pain, you should speak with your doctor before changing up your bed. For hip pain, softer beds with a Zoned Support design may help the most out of any online option. Pressure-relieving beds usually help cradle your pressure points more than an average mattress.
Generally speaking, getting a softer mattress is better when it comes to accommodating hip pain. You also want a bed that offers an excellent amount of support. Beds with Zoned Support help to promote neutral spinal alignment while you sleep, so getting a mattress with that feature combined with a softer profile is best.
Memory foam is usually a great material for hip pain, but it does depend on the style of memory foam you choose. A firm, denser style of memory foam bed may provide more resistance than you’d like in your mattress. Softer beds with lighter, more responsive memory foam feels are usually best for accommodating hip pain.
Based on our years of expertise and observations, hip pain usually comes into play when sleeping on your side. Since the hips dig into beds more when you’re in this position, more pressure is placed on this area of the body, resulting in more pain. We recommend sleeping on your back or stomach to reduce the amount of nightly hip pain you experience. Sleeping in one main sleeping position throughout the night may also help reduce the pressure put upon the joints in your hips.
A mattress has the ability to cause hip pain if it’s too soft or hard or has started sagging over time. Your hips may sink uncomfortably when laying on a mattress that’s too soft, leading to misalignment. A mattress that’s too firm will put a lot of pressure on your joints, particularly your hips and shoulders.
