Upgrading most weapons in Elden Ring will require you to gather Smithing Stones, which are available to buy from the Twin Maiden Husks if players find all the Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearings. As you level up and explore the Lands Between, you may come across various ranks of Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. While these items are scattered in many places, Bell Bearings unlock them faster.
Nine ranks of Smithing Stones work to fully upgrade a weapon to +25. This max improvement rank will require you to gather 12 of each Stone type, except for the last rank, which requires a single rare item called an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. As your character explores Elden Ring, you can find several powerful weapons, encouraging you to buy more upgrade materials that enhance the versatility of that equipment.
The Bell Bearings you find in the open world can be used to unlock different ranks of Smithing Stones in the shops of NPC vendors. The higher level of Bell Bearing you find, the higher rank of Stones that become available for purchase through Runes.
Where To Find Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]
Defeat A Boss To Clear The Path
The first Miner’s Bell Bearing is found in Liurnia of the Lakes and will require players to defeat the Crystalian boss in the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. Although this boss might seem intimidating at first, it is very accessible, as the trick to defeating it is breaking its poise. Crystalian bosses are very resistant to most forms of damage, but after breaking their poise, they become brittle and more susceptible to all attacks.
To break an enemy’s poise, you should keep performing charged attacks and jumping heavy attacks. You must keep up the pressure, as enemies will slowly recover their poise over time in Elden Ring. After breaking the Crystalian’s poise, you can perform a visceral attack to do massive damage and permanently lower the creature’s defenses.
After breaking its poise once, you have the option to either fight the Crystalian boss as you usually would or continue to break its poise to get some more critical hits. The Bell Bearing you want is dropped by this boss once it is defeated, alongside many Runes you can spend on the items you can buy from the Twin Maiden Husks. The new items in their shop unlocked by this Bearing include:

Gather Rare Items Or Travel Through A Difficult Area
To acquire the second Miner’s Bell Bearing, you will first need to get to Altus Plateau by acquiring the two medallions or going through the Ravine-Veiled Village in Liurnia of the Lakes. Obtaining the medallions will require you to travel across the map, but it is ultimately easier than the alternative as you won’t have to defeat a boss to get both pieces.
The first medallion can be found on a chest in Fort Haight in eastern Limgrave, and the second medallion in Fort Faroth, located in the easternmost
region in
Elden Ring
, Caelid
.
Getting to the Sealed Tunnel after that should be relatively straightforward as all enemies can be avoided with the help of Torrent. Arriving at the mine, you should notice a peculiar-looking wall to the west of the Site of Grace. Hitting or rolling through that wall will reveal it to be illusory and will unlock the way forward into the mines.
From here, simply hug the right side and proceed through the tunnel to quickly find a chest containing the second Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing. Turning this item over to the Maiden Husks will unlock more items for sale, including:

Head To The Giant’s Domain
The third Miner’s Bell is located in one of the hardest regions to reach in the game, Elden Ring‘s Mountaintops of the Giants. Accessing this area will require players to first complete Leyndell, the Royal Capital, which translates to defeating the golden shade of Godfrey, the First Elden Lord, and Morgott, the Omen King. After that, you must head east towards the Forbidden Lands.

Using the Rold Medallion that Melina gifts you, your character must ride the Grand Lift of Rold up towards the Mountaintops of the Giants. Once you’re there, proceed northeast to find the Zamor Ruins while attempting to avoid the many Knights of Zamor enemies that roam the area. Finally, in the southwest section of the ruins, players should find stairs leading underground to a steel door.

Opening the door and looting the chest inside will net your Tarnished the third Miner’s Bell Bearing, allowing them to buy new items once again. This time, your selection from the Twin Maiden Husks will expand to include these items:

Defeat Twin Foes In Farum Azula
The final Miner’s Bell Bearing is the most straightforward one that you can get, as it is looted from the mandatory Godskin Duo boss in Elden Ring. This boss can be found very late in the game, in the northern part of Crumbling Farum Azula. As your character enters the Dragon Temple, the boss fight will trigger when they approach the stairs at the end of the room.
The Godskin Duo is not the hardest boss in Crumbling Farum Azula, but they can quickly outnumber the Tarnished given their numbers. The good news is that the boss pair share a health bar, so striking one depletes the Godskin Duo’s overall health. Due to this, this fight is much easier if you pick one of the two to focus on. Typically, the Apostle is better to take down first, as its defeat will reduce the amount of Black Flame spells you’ll need to dodge.
Once you have the Bell Bearing from the Duo’s reward drops, you can return to the Maiden Husks to expand their shop once again. Doing this will add these items for purchase:
Where To Get Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones (Base Game)
Max Out Your Weapon Upgrades
Although there is no Miner’s Bell Bearing in Elden Ring that will make Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones sellable with the Twin Maiden Husks, there are several methods to acquire these Stones. Dragon Smithing Stones are significantly more powerful than the usual Smithing Stones, so acquiring these crafting items is typically far more involved and requires you to complete some long quest chains.
Below are all known quest chains and locations that can reward players with Dragon Smithing Stones. As you can see in the above video by YouTube creator Pastorgainz Games, you may have to meet some prerequisites to unlock areas where these Stones are. Some are located in the base game, while others have been added with the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring.
Stormveil Castle
It is possible to buy one from Gatekeeper Gostoc. This NPC can be found very early in Elden Ring, as players arrive at Stormveil Castle, but many Tarnished often kill him because if he is left alive, he will steal some of the player’s runes every time they die.
However, those who show restraint against Gostoc will eventually be rewarded, as an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone can be bought from him for 20,000 Runes. This only becomes available after you complete Nepheli’s questline. As there are a limited number of Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones that can be acquired in the game per run, those who wish to fully upgrade a variety of armaments would do well to spare the rune thief.
If left alive, Gostoc can eventually be found in Godrick’s Throneroom as a merchant in
Elden Ring
who carries a variety of useful items for sale.
Raya Lucaria Academy
You can acquire a Dragon Smithing Stone by completing Sorceress Sellen’s quest chain. You can find Sorceress Sellen in the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave. You will need to progress fairly far along the main storyline to complete most of Sellen’s quest, as she requires you to find Sorcerer Azur in the Hermit Village near Mt. Gelmir.
Next, you need to find Sorcerer Lusat in Sellia, Town of Sorcery, and defeat Starscourage Radahn in Caelid. Then, you need to find Sorceress Sellen’s body in the Witchbane Ruins on the Weeping Peninsula. After finding Sellen in Seluvis’ Secret Chamber, you can then fight Witchhunter Jerren and gain your Dragon Smithing Stone when they are defeated.
Mountaintops Of The Giants
One Dragon Smithing Stone is located in the Mountaintops of the Giants, close to the Church of Repose landmark. From this place, head southeast until you see a huge skull lying around in the fields of snow that make up the mountainous region. Go inside the skull’s mouth to find the Stone on a corpse not too far from where you enter.
Bestial Sanctum
The Bestial Sanctum is a rather mysterious area in Caelid that most players are accidentally transported to early in the game. Here, you can acquire a Dragon Smithing Stone one of two ways. First, you can bring the character Gurranq, Beast Clergyman, nine Deathroot to eat. Second, you can also kill Gurranq after you have already defeated Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula.
Either route you choose, you can get a Dragon Smithing Stone from this region. Depending on what you do, you will either be given the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone by Gurranq for the Deathroot, or have to pick the item off the NPC when you kill him.
Consecrated Snowfield
Three different Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are located in the Consecrated Snowfield, one of the largest areas in the Lands Between to explore. One is dropped alongside the Night’s Calvary armor set, which you get from defeating the mini-bosses of the same name you can find guarding a caravan. Another Stone is on a corpse above a frozen waterfall right above Great Wyrm Teodorix, near the Cave of the Forlorn Grace Site.
The final Dragon Smithing Stone here can be obtained within the Yelough Anix Tunnel, a small hidden area in the Snowfield. You’ll have to defeat an enemy named the Alabaster Lord here to reach the body holding this rare crafting material. Drop through the Tunnel past the area with the wooden walkways to confront this mini-boss and claim your prize.
Miquella’s Haligtree
Miquella’s Haligtree in Elden Ring is a hidden zone most Tarnished skip past, but it is the location of two Dragon Smithing Stones which are fairly easy to obtain. The first is found off of a Leonine Misbegotten corpse near the Haligtree Town Site of Lost Grace. The second and final of this zone is found after defeating Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree, a boss guarding the path leading further down the tree.
This boss is very similar to the Loretta you fight near Ranni’s Rise. After Loretta has been slain, take the elevator which goes to Elphael and you can find the stone in a nearby chest in Elden Ring.
Crumbling Farum Azula
Another three Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are in Crumbling Farum Azula, the collapsing realm beyond time you visit late in Elden Ring‘s story. One Stone is dropped by the Farum Azula Dragon that tries to attack you on the curved path to the southwest of this location. You’ll easily know which dragon this is, as they dive in to attack you suddenly, making them hard to miss.
An additional Farum Azula Dragon can be found southeast of the Dragon Temple Rooftop Site of Grace. From this resting point, head southeast until you see a massive dragon constantly summoning red lightning around itself. You can defeat this dragon for another stone and explore the surrounding areas to discover a nearby Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones can only help you maximize the upgrades on a normal weapon. Just like regular Smithing Stones, only Somber variants of these items can improve special tools different than the usual equipment you find.
The final Dragon Smithing Stone here is on a body north of the Dragon Temple Grace Site. You’ll have to travel past the floating debris of the region until you find a narrow path with dragon statues, which leads to a spiral staircase. Head up the stairs, then head south to see a large pillar floating among the debris. Climb this pillar to find the body whose loot includes the Stone you’re looking for.
Where To Get Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones (Shadow Of The Erdtree)
Explore The Land Of Shadow For More Upgrades
Thankfully, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has expanded the amount of Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones you can get on a single playthrough. Eight new Stones can be found in the Land of Shadow where imposing enemies reside. Make sure you have defeated Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring to access the DLC expansion and the new open world map to travel around in.
