Still, the conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, his lover/mortal enemy (played by Johnny Depp/Mads Mikkelsen) is the focus of the narrative. While this does make the scenes with Newt feel a little like watching Harry Potter entirely from Ron’s perspective, it’s given many fans what they want — more exploration into Albus Dumbledore.

Fantastic Beasts 3 Brought Up More Questions About Dumbledore’s Past

Fantastic Beasts 3 contained a significant plot twist: Albus isn’t the only Dumbledore with secrets, because Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) is a secret Dumbledore. As Albus discovered, Credence Barebone is actually Aurelius Dumbledore, the son of Aberforth Dumbledore (Richard Coyle), Albus’ brother. This makes Credence/Aurelius Dumbledore’s long-lost nephew, and the three Dumbledore men coming to terms with this truth is a vital theme of the movie’s final act.

While it does end somewhat happily, with Credence/Aurelius and Aberforth reconnecting, it opens up many questions. Aberforth is mentioned only once in the books. Still, in no Harry Potter medium has Dumbledore ever spoken of a nephew, much less one with ties to evil wizards like Grindelwald and an uncanny resemblance to Harry Potter‘s Severus Snape.

There were many more questions that could have been answered through further exploration of Albus Dumbledore’s past. However, with the Fantastic Beasts franchise seeming done, those questions may remain unanswered.

Dumbledore Will Be Recast In The Future Of Harry Potter

The Harry Potter Show Will Have Yet Another Take On The Character

Though the Fantastic Beasts movies failed to reignite the franchise, the Wizarding World is moving forward with some new projects that could see the return of Albus Dumbledore. There have been rumors about the possibility of a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie — based on the popular stage play, which hit London theaters on July 31, 2016. The book itself was released on the same day. The play was not penned directly by J.K. Rowling, but by an author named Jack Thorne. However, it’s based on an original story crafted by Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne.

The Cursed Child follows the second generation of Harry Potter; namely, Harry’s son Albus Severus, and his best friend Scorpius Malfoy, as they take a journey through time. The four-act production received rave reviews from critics, and it was a great addition to the Harry Potter universe. There is now some consideration that the continuation of Harry’s story could be made into a movie.

In fact, Christopher Columbus has expressly stated that he’d be interested in creating a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child adaptation and many fans have expressed hope to see the original cast return as older versions of their iconic characters. In The Cursed Child, Harry converses with the portrait of Albus Dumbledore. However, as Michael Gambon has since passed away, the role would need to be recast.

While a movie version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is far from confirmed, it is all but guaranteed another actor will be stepping into the role of Dumbledore before long. A Harry Potter series is on the way, which will retell all of the novels, including many things that the Harry Potter movies had to leave out. Griphook, initially played by Verne Troyer (with Warwick Davis voicing the character) in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, saw Davis assuming the full portrayal by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Helena Ravenclaw transitioned from Nina Young in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to Kelly Macdonald in Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Fat Lady guarding Gryffindor Tower was another switch, moving from Elizabeth Spriggs in the first film to Dawn French by the third. Even the overarching antagonist of the series, Voldemort, had a major recasting, Richard Bremmer and Ian Hart were replaced by Ralph Fiennes. Dumbledore’s Humor Is Not Shown In The Movies

Despite playing the same character, Michael Gambon and Richard Harris each found different ways to approach the character of Dumbledore while still staying true to elements from the novels. In the books, Dumbledore was a larger-than-life character, with Harry and the other students being in awe of him in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Harris immediately brought this element to the character simply through his legendary status. He was filled with gravitas and commanded the screen, always making Dumbledore the most important part of any scene.

Gambon, on the other hand, seemed to want to make the character more grounded and was interested in playing up Dumbledore’s flaws. His Dumbledore was not as warm and welcoming as Harris’ version and the more that was revealed about Dumbledore’s mission to fight Voldemort, the more it became clear that Gambon was playing him as a burdened man who was nevertheless going to do what was necessary. In the end, Gambon had more time with the character and his version of Dumbledore feels closer to the grand yet complex character of the novels.

While both of these versions drew specific elements from the character in the novel, neither version captured the strangeness and humor of Dumbledore. From the first book, Dumbledore is a quirky character and has a somewhat aloof demeanor. It makes him and his heroism all the more interesting given how goofy he can be. Though neither Harris nor Gambon are particularly funny in their roles as Dumbledore, it is possible the Harry Potter series could give a new version of Dumbledore with these qualities.
