10 Best Feats For Fighters In Baldur's Gate 3

Fighters are perhaps the most versatile class all-around in Baldur’s Gate 3. The martial class is more than capable of fulfilling many different roles within the party; it offers the opportunity for many unique fighter builds in BG3. While this versatility of play style might make choosing the right feats a bit of a headache, a few pair naturally with these archetypal warriors.

While most classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 gain three feats throughout the game’s three acts, fighters gain an extra feat at level six, further adding to the customization of each character. This really helps make each fighter unique and adaptable, which I’ve found myself, as my Eldtrich Knight character feels completely different from my Battle Master or playing as Lae’zel. So, while everyone’s fighter will have different priorities, this list has some great options to suit most builds.

10 Charger – Open Up New Attack Options

Running Full Speed At The Enemy Has Never Been More Fun

Charger is an excellent choice for any fighter and does exactly what it sounds like by letting the character run full speed at enemies. The feat opens up two new ways to interact with foes in battle, the first being the Charger: Weapon Attack. This ability uses the fighter’s action and bonus action to charge forward and attack the first enemy in the way without provoking any attacks of opportunity.

Charger

Weapon Attack: charge forward to make a weapon attack without provoking opportunity attacks. Shove: Charge forward and shove an enemy.

The second option is Charger: Shove, which again uses both action and bonus action. This time, the fighter charges forward and shoves the first enemy in the way. This also does not trigger opportunity attacks; the shove distance depends on the fighter’s Strength and the target’s weight. The Charger feat is an excellent way for fighters to preposition in battle without provoking attacks of opportunity and while still attacking the enemy.

The Charger: Weapon Attack counts as a single weapon attack, allowing the fight to use their Extra Attack feature still.

9 Martial Adept – Gain Battle Manoeuvres

More Combat Options Regardless Of Chosen Subclass

The Battle Master subclass is considered by many to be the best fighter subclass in BG3. It gives the fighter Superiority Dice, which can enhance their attacks or perform new ones. The Martial Adept feat is fantastic as it provides the fighter with the chance to learn two maneuvers from the Battle Master list.

Martial Adept

Learn two maneuvers from the Battle Master list. Receive 1 Superiority Die, which is regained on short and long rests.

This works brilliantly for those looking for more versatility when playing as a Champion or Eldritch Knight, but it is also an excellent choice for a Battle Master. Battler Master fighters learn three maneuvers at level three, two more at level seven, and a final two at level 10 for seven. This would push the number a Battle Master fighter could learn to nine out of a possible 14, ensuring that they are spoiled for choice when in combat.

8 Durable – Make The Most Out Of Short Rests

Lae'zel in camp during a conversation in BG3.

Durable is a fantastic feat and one of my favorites for frontline classes. Firstly Durable increases the fighter’s Constitution ability score by one, to a maximum of 20. This will immediately translate to more hit points overall, especially if the Constitution score is left on an odd number during character creation. While this might not look like a vast improvement, the change can make the difference between having a plus two or plus three modifiers, which impacts hit points.

Durable

Plus one to Constitution score. Regain full hit points on a short rest.

However, the best feature of Durable is that it allows the fighter to regain their full hit points when they have a short rest. Usually, short rests only restore half a character’s hit points, rounded down, so Durable can keep fighters going for longer between long rests. This also pairs wonderfully with fighters who regain their class actions Action Surge and Second Wind on a short rest.

7 Heavy Armour Master – Get Even More Protection

Reduced Damage Taken On The Frontline

Some feats are deceptively simple but can have huge benefits, and Heavy Armour Master is definitely one of them. As all fighters have proficiency with heavy armor in BG3, it makes sense to help them get the most out of it beyond the usual higher AC. That’s where the Heavy Armour Master feat comes in because increasing the fighter’s Strength ability score by one reduces the damage they take.

Heavy Armour Master

Increase Strength score by one. Incoming damage from non-magical attacks is decreased by three.

While wearing heavy armor, all incoming damage from non-magical attacks is decreased by three with this feat. And while three points of damage may not sound much, it soon adds up, especially with groups of enemies. This is a fantastic feat at lower levels in Act 1, where enemies will more often be using more mundane weapons like swords or bows.

6 Sentinel – Excel At Battlefield Control

More Options With Reactions & Opportunity Attacks

Sentinel is an excellent feat for a frontline character looking to gain better control over enemies in combat. The feat gives three different ways to offer support to other party members by allowing the fighter to use their attack of opportunity reaction in a new way. With Sentinel: Vengeance, the fighter can use their response to make a weapon attack against an enemy in melee range who has just attacked an ally.

Sentinel

Vengeance: use reaction to make a weapon attack against a target who has just attacked an ally. Snare: targets hit with opportunity attacks cannot move. Opportunity Advantage: advantage on opportunity attacks.

Sentinel: Snare adds to this by preventing enemies hit by the fighter’s attacks of opportunity from moving. This is great for keeping more formidable enemies away from squishier party members if they try to reposition. Finally, Sentinel: Opportunity Advantage gives the fighter an advantage on all their attack rolls for opportunity attacks to further increase the odds of landing a hit to keep an enemy locked in place.

5 Great Weapon Master – More Attacks & Damage

Take Down More Enemies With Toggleable Feature

Fighters benefit significantly from being able to use all weapon types in BG3, opening up tons of options when putting together the perfect fighter build. And with an abundance of great two-handed weapons in BG3, opting for this fighting style at level one is a fantastic choice. This can be further enhanced by the Great Weapon Master feat, which opens up an extra attack and the chance to deal even more damage.

Great Weapon Master

Bonus Attack: After killing a target or landing a critical hit, make another melee weapon attack as a bonus action. All In take minus five penalties to attack rolls for 10 points extra damage.

With Great Weapon Master, whenever the fighter lands a critical hit with a two-handed melee weapon or kills a creature, they can make another weapon attack as a bonus action on that turn. With the toggleable passive ability, the fight can take a minus five penalty to their attack rolls with two-handed or versatile melee weapons in exchange for plus 10 to the damage dealt.

4 Savage Attacker – Gain Advantage On Damage Rolls

Never Get The Minimal Damage Again

A fantastic feat for any martial class is Savage Attacker, which has a simple but impactful passive feature. With Savage Attacker, the damage dice are rolled twice whenever the fighter lands a melee weapon attack, and the highest result is used. This can soon add up to tremendous amounts of damage at higher levels, particularly with fighters getting three attacks per turn at level 11, and ensure that no attack ever gets the disappointing minimal damage.

The Savage Attacker feat pairs perfectly with any items for fighters or equipment that can lower the critical hit threshold or trigger critical hits. Killer’s Sweetheartare worth keeping an eye out for as the damage dice would be doubled and then rolled with advantage. With the right equipment and buffs, this can easily take out some enemies in one hit.

At level three, Champion Fighters gain the Improved Critical Hit feature, which works well with Savage Attacker.

3 Alert – Bonus To Initiative & Prevent Surprise

Stop The Enemy Getting The Drop On The Party

Alert is another favorite feat of mine, as it benefits almost all classes to be as early in the initiative order as possible. With Alert, the fighter will gain a plus-five bonus to their initiate roll. It can be further enhanced with items such as the Sentinel Shield which gives a plus three to initiative and the Flame Enamelled Armour which gives a plus two bonus.

Alert

Gain plus five bonus to initiative and can’t be surprised.

But Alert has a second feature that is perfect for frontline characters like fighters: it prevents them from being surprised. In BG3, surprise prevents the affected characters from taking actions or reactions on their turn, effectively skipping them. Having the fighter be able to attack the enemy for even one round while the rest of the party is surprised can make a huge difference and prevent squishier characters from taking too much damage.

The

Elixir of Vigilance

provides the same effects as Alert by preventing the drinker from being surprised with a plus five to initiative. Keeping one of these in stock is a good plan for tough fights as the initiative bonus stacks to give plus 10 to initiative rolls.

2 Mage Slayer – Better Attacks Against Spellcasters

Better Odds Of Saving Throws & Disrupt Their Concentration

Shadowheart, Wyll And Lae'zel on the Nautiloid in Baldur's Gate 3.

Sending martial classes up against spellcasters can sometimes put the fighter at a severe disadvantage. Luckily, the Mage Slayer feat evens the playing field a little, giving the fighter some awesome features to deal with pesky enemy wizards, sorcerers, or clerics. Firstly, Mage Slayer grants the fighter advantage on saving throws against spells cast at them within melee range, and I found this a lifesaver when fighting the Bane Cultists in Act 3.

Mage Slayer

Saving Throw Advantage: advantage on saving throws against spells cast on character in melee range. Attack Caster: Use a reaction to attack casters if they cast within melee range. Break Concentration: Enemies hit have disadvantage on concentration checks.

The second feature then allows the fighter to use their reaction to attack enemy spellcasters within melee range if they use any spell. Lastly, any enemies hit by the fighter’s attack have disadvantage on concentration saving throws to maintain their spells. This is perfect for situations where one or more party members are incapacitated due to a spell such as Hold Person or Hypnotic Pattern.

1 Shield Master – Even Better Protection With Shields

Improved Dexterity Saving Throw To Reduce Damage

Shield of Devotion in Baldur's Gate 3.

The iconic imagery of a fighter is one of an armor-clad warrior, weapon in one hand and shield in the other. The final fighter feat is Shield Master, and it is perfect for those who prefer the classic sword and board fighter archetypes. Firstly, Shield Master gives the fighter a flat plus two bonus to Dexterity saving throws while using a shield, which is very useful against spells like fireball.

Shield Master

Plus two bonus to Dexterity saving throws when using a shield. Block: If a spell forces a Dexterity save, use a reaction to reduce or negate the damage.

However, it is the Shield Master: Block feature that makes it so useful for fighters in Baldur’s Gate 3. With this, the fighter can use their reaction whenever a spell forces them to make a Dexterity saving throw. This behaves in the same way as Evasion and will allow them to take half damage on a failed save and no damage at all with a successful save.
