Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Ghosts season 4, episode 6, “A Star Is Dead.”Ghosts season 4 has had an enormous start so far, and episode 5, “A Star Is Dead,” continues to intensify things for Sam (Rose McIver), Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), and the ghosts at Woodstone B&B. The season has settled down slightly since Ghosts season 4’s Patience (Mary Holland) took over the house. In the Ghosts season 4 premiere, Patience seeks revenge on Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), who banishes her to the dirt. She is overbearing in the first few episodes of the season but disappears into the dirt once more, and the other spirits have yet to hear from her.
The other ghosts are getting the spotlight since Patience’s retreat to the dirt. Isaac is trying to shake his breakup from Nigel Chessum (John Hartman), whom he left at the altar in the Ghosts season 3 finale. Isaac tries a new hairstyle in episode 4, but sadly, episode 5 may have confirmed that Isaac’s “new do” was just a one-time thing. Trevor (Asher Grodman) also gets the spotlight, redeeming the loss of his career when he orchestrates a work retreat at Woodstone for his remote finance job. In episode 5, it’s Sam’s turn for the limelight.

The production even has a few surprises for Jay, whose business partner, Mark (Tristan D. Lalla), is one of the Anything Goes cast members. When Jay tries to talk to Mark about the restaurant’s walk-in freezer, Mark tells him not to talk about work when he’s with the theater group. When Jay presses, Mark quiets him, telling him it’s a sacred space. Thus, the theatrical production shakes things up for many Ghosts season 4 characters.

8 The Ghosts Convince Sam To Audition For The Play
Alberta Has A History Of Show Business
Despite her hesitation due to a previous experience with the show, Sam decides to audition for Anything Goes. Still, it takes some encouragement from the ghosts of the CBS series — primarily Alberta, who has a history of show business. Alberta encourages Sam to pursue her dream of being on stage, noting that she misses the limelight. The opportunity comes up when one of the Hudson Valley Players, the show’s lead, has to drop out of the production.
Sam left out the part of the story where she didn’t get the part because she vomited before she could even sing.
The lead role that has become available, Reno Sweeney, is the part that Sam auditioned for in high school. However, Sam left out the part of the story where she didn’t get the part because she vomited before she could even sing. The negative experience stands in Sam’s way of pursuing her dream, so Alberta chimes in with encouragement. Since Alberta is a Prohibition-era jazz club singer, she has plenty of show business stories to make Sam feel better.
7 Alberta Trains Sam For The Role (& There Is Some Drama)
Alberta Uses Her Knowledge From The Living World
Ultimately, Alberta convinces Sam to take the role because she offers to train her. It is sweet to see the jazz singer use her experience from the living world to prepare Sam for the audition. The partnership is accompanied by a training montage, showing Alberta pushing Sam to her limits with various training exercises, including having Sam run around the fountain and demanding she cry on command.
However, as the audition approaches, Alberta overhears Sam’s competition, Marisa, warming up for the audition and gets nervous for her friend. Despite her genuine belief in Sam, Alberta devises a plan with Flower (Sheila Carrasco) to ensure Sam gets the role. Alberta and Flower scheme that the hippie ghost will walk through Marisa just before her audition, causing her to fail. Sam is devastated when Flower accidentally reveals the plan.
6 Sasappis’ Dream Power Returns
Sass Enters Jay’s Dreams Again
Many new people are coming in and out of Sam and Jay’s house for Anything Goes, and one gets stuck in Jay’s and Sasappis’ heads. In Ghosts season 3, episode 2, the series reveals that Sasappis’ ghost power is entering the dreams of the living, meaning he is the only ghost who can regularly communicate with Jay. Sasappis’ ghost power returns after a hiatus in episode 6, with the Lenape spirit again involving himself in Jay’s dreams.

However, the dream changes course dramatically when Marisa, one of the actors from the Hudson Valley Players, pops into Jay’s dream. She and Sass hit it off, with Jay leaving the scene entirely. Later, Sass tells the others that he hung out with Marisa in Jay’s dream and begins seeing her on and off, but the romance has a significant twist.
5 Sasappis Finds Out That He’s Been Dating Jay In His Dreams
Sass Encounters A Harsh Romance Reality
After Sass sees Marisa in Jay’s dreams again, he tells the other ghosts how great it is to hang out with her. However, when Sasappis begins to list the qualities about Marisa that make her laid-back — like the fact that she’s a superhero and Star Wars fan — Trevor and Pete point out the harsh reality of the spirit’s new girlfriend. The ghosts make Sass see that, since all of Marisa’s interests align with Jay’s, it proves she is just a creation of his subconscious.
Sasappis is devastated and feels understandably weird about the development. Despite the series’ ability to stretch its ghost lore to incorporate wild plots, nothing could explain Marisa’s ability to communicate with Sass in Jay’s dream without it just being an extension of Jay’s subconscious. The storyline continues the Lenape spirit’s checkered dating history. Sass wants a girlfriend but hasn’t found someone he can connect with.
4 Jay’s Dream Teases His Parents’ Debut
Jay’s Parents Will Appear In Ghosts Season 4
Before things pick up between Sass and Marisa in Jay’s dream, Jay accepts the 2024 James Beard Award for the Best New Chef, Northeast. When Sass presents Jay with the award, he begins an acceptance speech, which starts by thanking everyone who believes in him. Jay snubs his wife, Sam, by mentioning his mom, Champa, to whom he says he owes everything. The moment teases the arrival of Jay’s parents, which will happen this season.

The other ghosts know about Sass’ dating issues, which are exacerbated by his disappointing conclusion with Marisa. So, Pete offers to use his ghost power for good. Pete tells Sass that he will leave the property and look for another geographically unbound spirit to bring back and bring her back to date him. While the idea that Pete could find someone willing to date Sass without him there seems far-fetched, it opens up the possibilities for other ghosts to join the show.
2 Samantha Lands The Role & Performs With Alberta On Stage
Sam Redeems Her High School Failure
Despite hesitating when she learns that Alberta plans to sabotage Marisa’s audition, Sam auditions for Anything Goes. Alberta convinces Sam to audition when she reveals that she asked Flower to sabotage Marisa’s audition because she wanted the role for Sam and herself. Alberta explains that she misses being on stage and wants to relive those moments vicariously through Sam. It’s unclear if the pep talk works until Sam is on stage again.
Despite her fear of reliving her high school mishap, Sam auditions for the lead role of Reno Sweeney, and she gets the part. Sam has the confidence to nail the audition when Alberta comes on stage during her audition and tells Sam to sing to her. This gives Sam the confidence and support she needs to knock it out of the park. When the show is in full swing, Sam and Alberta perform “Anything Goes” together, both reveling in the moment.
1 Thor Is Missing From Ghosts Season 4, Episode 5
Where Is Thor?
With all the commotion, it’s not instantly noticeable that Thor is missing from Ghosts season 4, episode 5. The Viking ghost is typically involved in the house’s affairs, so it was odd to see him gone. His absence has led some to wonder if the ghost is missing or if he’s just elsewhere in “A Star Is Dead.” Still, it’s a big event for the mansion by anyone’s standards, warranting an appearance from Thor.

Episode 6 can clarify whether the ghost is missing or whether he just had other matters to attend to. If it’s the latter, the next installment of Ghosts will likely follow up with the Viking and whatever he is doing. Thor can’t stay missing for long, especially without the other ghosts noticing. Flower and Thor have rekindled their romance, so the hippie will miss him if he is absent.
