The Indian women’s hockey team is gearing up for its opening match against Malaysia in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024, which will take place in Rajgir, Bihar, from November 11 to 20. All matches of the eighth edition of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy will be held at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium. India’s first match will be against Malaysia on November 11, followed by a clash with Korea the next day.

The Indian women’s hockey team clinched the tournament title in 2016 and successfully defended it last year in Ranchi by defeating Japan in the final. After missing out on the Paris Olympics, this will be a major tournament for the women’s hockey team for the redevelopment of the unit.

Teams and format of Asian Champions Trophy 2024

This year’s championships feature six teams: the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Malaysia, and Thailand, all competing for the title. The teams will compete in a round-robin format during the group stage, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.

Rankings and competition

China, the gold medallists at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, are the highest-ranked team in the tournament, sitting at world No. 6. India follows at No. 9, while Japan is ranked 11th, South Korea 15th, Malaysia 23rd, and Thailand 29th. South Korea is the most successful team in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, having won three titles. Both Japan and India have each secured the championship twice.
