10 Best Games To Play After Silent Hill 2 Remake

The Silent Hill 2 Remake took the world by storm when it debuted, offering players a faithful recreation of the original with a slew of extra new features that fans and newcomers greatly appreciated. Throughout its story and subsequent playthroughs, players are treated to a gripping and emotional story that’s absolutely terrifying. However, there’s only so much Silent Hill 2 to satisfy horror fans, and eventually, they’ll need to move on.

While one can spend hours finding all the major differences between the original Silent Hill 2 and the remake, there are plenty of other amazing horror games to play afterward. While there are generally good horror titles like Alien: Isolation, there are a lot that fit the Silent Hill 2 niche quite well, giving players some familiar experiences to jump into after beating the Silent Hill 2 Remake. From indie survival horrors to a plethora of remakes, these horror games are sure to entertain Silent Hill 2 fans.

10 Signalis (Rose-Engine)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Signalis was a breakout hit when it launched in 2022, offering one of the best indie survival horror games available and giving fans of the genre something they’d never really experienced before. It’s a moving, beautifully crafted game with gorgeous visuals and a thrilling atmosphere that simply never relents. It wears its influences on its sleeve, from the surreal elements feeling right out of David Lynch’s movies to the nailbiting sci-fi of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

There’s a wonderful story to be told here too, one that will stick with the player long after they’re done. Fans will play as Elster the Replika as she explores a desolate planet in search of answers. There’s a lot to love about Signalis, and it’s definitely one of the more unique survival horror games. While the setting is a far cry from Silent Hill, the vibes, tone, and even gameplay all match it perfectly.

9 The Evil Within 2 (Tango Gameworks)

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

The Evil Within 2 is a more action-packed version of Silent Hill 2, coming from the horror masterminds – and rhythm game aficionados too, surprisingly – Tango Gameworks. It is a sequel to the first game, bringing with it a slew of improvements and some new genuinely haunting set pieces that are sure to creep out anyone playing. The tone is a little different from Silent Hill 2, but the foundations are very similar, giving players a fairly comparable experience at times.

Players do not need to have played
The Evil Within
to play the sequel, although some elements early on will be confusing. However, the first game is fantastic and definitely worth playing regardless.

Of course, The Evil Within 2 comes from the legendary Shinji Mikami, director of the original Resident Evil, and one of the ancestors of the survival horror genre, as well as an executive producer on a number of incredible Capcom games – including Phoenix Wright, amazingly. There’s a lot of innovation in The Evil Within 2 that may not appeal to all survival horror fans, but will definitely feel more at home with more casual players. It’s a genuine delight – albeit a very scary one – and a must-play for Silent Hill 2 fans.

8 Silent Hill 3 (Team Silent)

Platforms: PlayStation 2, PC

Silent Hill 3 isn’t a direct sequel to Silent Hill 2, instead serving as a sequel to the first game. It’s a little confusing, but that shouldn’t put players off this undeniably bizarre and wonderful game. It’s a violent, gory, scary game with a great protagonist in the young Heather, a girl who just wants to relax and hang out at the mall, Robin Sparkles-style. Of course, things don’t exactly go to plan, and soon Heather is gunning down monsters with an Uzi while exploring blood-soaked rooms and encountering Robbie the bloody bunny.

Silent Hill 3 definitely feels different from Silent Hill 2, especially due to its significant change in protagonist. However, it’s never worse as a result and offers a unique spin on the genre and series. Of course, it’s worth playing it in preparation for the potential Silent Hill 3 remake, as the enormous success of the Silent Hill 2 Remake will surely spur Konami to hurry up its plans to make more.

7 The Medium (Bloober Team)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch (Cloud), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

The Medium, also from Silent Hill 2 Remake‘s Bloober Team, is definitely worth checking out. While it’s quite different from Silent Hill, largely due to its setting and parallel worlds mechanic, it still offers those tanky controls and chilling monsters to face against, including one voiced by none other than Troy Baker. It’s also a gorgeous game with stunning interior design both in the normal world and parallel world settings. These environments are worth playing the game for alone.

After his appearance in HBO’s The Last Of Us, new fans are beginning to take notice of video game actor Troy Baker, who played Joel in the game.

The Medium was almost a way for the Bloober Team to prove it could really nail the survival horror genre and that it was the right developer for the Silent Hill 2 Remake, offering a truly unique horror game like no other. The Medium manages to balance its creepy atmosphere, genuinely compelling puzzles, and a great story satisfyingly throughout its relatively short runtime. This is definitely one that will stick with players long after the credits roll, despite some mixed reviews.

6 Layers of Fear (Bloober Team)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Speaking of Bloober Team games, fans of the Silent Hill 2 remake should definitely check out the developers’ crowning achievement, Layers of Fear. It was Bloober’s very first game, a narrative-driven first-person psychological horror that’s unbelievably creepy and mysterious. It has since been repackaged with the second game as well as some new DLC, making it very accessible for modern players.

While it is very different from Silent Hill 2 – largely because it is first-person – it’s still fun to see how the developer got started. There’s also just a lot to love about Layers of Fear for a horror enthusiast, as it can be bone-chillingly scary at times. Layers of Fear is available on multiple platforms, so it’s very easy to pick up and play, making it the perfect way to spend a spooky weekend.

5 Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly (Tecmo)

Platforms: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is largely regarded as the best in the series and, as it’s a standalone experience, fans of Silent Hill 2 can jump in without needing to play through the first game – although it was considered so scary the director felt he had to tone it down for the sequel. This is a pretty terrifying survival horror game with some fairly unique gameplay mechanics, namely taking pictures of ghosts.

In Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, players direct the twin sister protagonists Mio and Mayu Amakura through a haunted Japanese village as its spirits attempt to hunt them down. Mio must use her trusty camera to fight off the ghosts while also exploring the village in search of a way to safety. It’s an intriguing game with a fairly deep storyline that’s a joy to play through. This is definitely not for the faint of heart and will serve as a great follow-up for Silent Hill 2 Remake fans.

4 Alone In The Dark (Pieces Interactive)

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

The Silent Hill 2 Remake was surprisingly not the only remake of a classic survival horror game as, in March 2024, fans of the classic Alone in the Dark got a star-studded remake. This was a direct remake of the original game, albeit while taking a lot of liberties when updating it for a modern audience. It stars David Habour and Jodie Comer as the two protagonists, making for a unique cinematic experience.

The Alone In The Dark remake updates the original survival horror game and keeps its Jazz Age tone, substantially different from the previous reboot.

While Alone in the Dark is perhaps not as good of a remake as Silent Hill 2, it offered a hugely improved look at the horror game that started the genre. The best parts of Alone in the Dark far outweigh the bad, making for an engaging and engrossing horror experience with a compelling story to boot. It’s definitely worth a playthrough, especially for those who simply cannot get enough of the survival horror genre.

3 Alan Wake 2 (Remedy Entertainment)

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Alan Wake 2 is easily one of the best horror games of the generation, proving to be simultaneously an enthralling mystery and a nail-biting masterclass in tension. It’s no surprise that Alan Wake 2 was 2023’s GOTY for many, and the DLC that launched later only helps make it an even more enticing experience for those looking for their next Silent Hill 2-esque game. It’s a blend of Silent Hill and Twin Peaks, bringing together the best and most weird elements of Remedy Entertainment’s game design and storytelling.

Alan Wake 2
is a sequel that can be enjoyed as a standalone experience. This makes a lot of sense considering the first game launched 13 years before, in 2010. While players may miss out on some references and understanding certain characters, it’s perfectly understandable for newcomers.

Alan Wake 2 made headlines for its avant-garde sequences and bizarre storytelling, but that should dissuade those who are more used to the Silent Hill 2 Remake’s more somber narrative. Alan Wake 2 still packs a punch, and its surreal elements only help heighten the horror. It is a complex, interesting, and well-told survival horror game filled with great scares and compelling characters.

2 Dead Space (Motive Studio)

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Speaking of remakes – and, of course, this isn’t the last one on the list – Silent Hill 2 Remake fans should check out one of the other incredible survival horror remakes, 2023’s Dead Space. This took an already phenomenal game and somehow made it even better, offering fans of the original and newcomers a truly genre-defining experience that showcased how a remake should be. Frankly, Dead Space’s remake is so good, that Silent Hill 2 had a lot to live up to – which it fortunately managed to do.

While the setting is admittedly very different from Silent Hill 2’s fog-smothered streets, the USG Ishimura is almost as iconic, proving to be a haunting place to explore, especially thanks to the many improvements of the remake. Dead Space is a classic for a reason, a titan in the horror genre, and well worth playing for those who enjoyed Silent Hill 2’s remake.

1 Resident Evil 2 Remake (Capcom)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch (Cloud), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Last, but certainly not least, is yet another survival horror remake: 2019’s Resident Evil 2. This really set the bar for both horror remakes and remakes in general, updating not just the visuals to a staggering degree – Resident Evil 2 absolutely still holds up today – but also the gameplay on a fundamental level. This was a huge improvement over the original, and while some of the charm is lost in translation, it is a very faithful recreation.

Resident Evil 2’s remake, just like Silent Hill 2’s, is a genuine classic thanks to its many upgrades and improvements over the original. It’s a must-play for Silent Hill 2 fans, even if the two series are quite different from one another. The Silent Hill 2 remake owes a lot to the Resident Evil 2 Remake, so fans should pay their respects by giving it a go if they haven’t already.
