Dwarves are a rare race in anime. When they do show up, they’re sure to make a difference. Dwarves are usually the greatest blacksmiths in whatever world they live in. They supply the main character with the god-tier weapons they need to fully realize their power as the protagonists. There are a couple of key characteristics that define all dwarves: they’re short, they’re great blacksmiths, and they usually prefer to settle things with their fists rather than spells.

If a main character has a dwarven blacksmith, their gear will be better than the rest. Dwarves like Kaijin from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and Beren from Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy are able to give their friends armor that gives them jaw-dropping new abilities. When a dwarf isn’t making weapons, they’re probably using them on the front lines.

10 Garrus

Reincarnated as a Sword

Garrus from Reincarnated as a Sword is a dedicated blacksmith and the closest thing to Granzell in terms of smithing skills. He’s patient, humble, and always ready to take on a difficult job. One of Garrus’ strongest skills is Godsight, an ability that allows him to perceive a weapon’s strength and best qualities just by looking at it. It’s a great skill for a blacksmith to have as it helps Garrus improve his work by getting objective data from his weapons.

He’s close to becoming a Divine Blacksmith, causing nobles to flock to him for work. While some of his stats aren’t too impressive, like his level two poison resistance, his level nine fire magic makes him potent in battle. He also has a high-tier level nine smithing magic capability under his sleeve, allowing him to create some of the best weapons in armor in Reincarnated as a Sword.

9 Kaijin

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Kaijin is the best blacksmith in the Armed Nation of Dwargon. He wanted nothing more than the freedom to pursue his craft, so he started a fight to get exiled from Dwargon and move to Tempest. It worked, and now Kaijin spends his days working with Kurobe to design the best weapons and armor Rimuru Tempest can handle. Kaijin isn’t just a good blacksmith, he’s a great brother as well, securing a future for his younger siblings when they move to Tempest.

Kaijin is an honorable man above all else. He made a promise to help Rimuru to establish his nation and stuck to it. When Vesta caused problems and blamed them on the dwarf, Kaijin didn’t complain. He understood that he couldn’t beat Vesta at his own game and stoically accepted his fate. In the great nation of Tempest, Kaijin’s help will always be appreciated.

8 Senshi

Delicious in Dungeon

Senshi stands out in Delicious in Dungeon. When other characters want to head up to the surface for a hot meal, Senshi wants to go deeper into the dungeon for his. There’s nothing he loves more than a good meal made from the monsters he slays and the plants he collects. The dwarven cook meets Laios, another person interested in the delicacies of the dungeon, and couldn’t have been more excited. He spends the series showing the party just how good they have it down in the dungeon.

Senshi isn’t just a great cook, he’s also more than competent in battle. He’s able to make special holy-water brews that are actually great flails, taking out the dead one at a time. When Laios was done using the holy-water as a flair, it conveniently turned to ice cream. Marcille, Chilchuck, and Senshi then went to Join Laios and have their bowl of delicious holy-water-ghost ice cream.

7 Beren

Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy

Beren is a loyal follower to Misumi Makoto and a strong adventurer on his own. His Appraisal skill is one of the best a dwarf can have, giving him the ability to instantly surmise an item’s worth. He’s one of the first characters to move into the Demiplane with Makoto and was even Makoto’s friend before Tomoe and Mio got their names. Beren and his dwarven allies help Makoto blend into the world of Tsukimichi. Makoto’s power is so much stronger than everyone around him, he sticks out like a sore thumb.

Beren and the other dwarves design the Draupnir Rings for their leader. Their rings drain Makoto of his mana, eventually becoming mobile storage devices for him once they’re filled up. With Beren’s help and masterful equipment, Makoto can have an answer for any problem that comes his way.

6 Juliette

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Juliette is an interesting character in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. When Zanoba and Rudeus need help making figurines, they questionably head to the slave market where they find Juliette for sale. They buy her and treat her to a meal before putting her to work. Juliette’s job is to make figurines for Zanoba to then design further, so Rudeus teaches her earth magic. She has a natural affinity as a dwarf, giving her a head start in her new lessons.

Within a month of learning, she’s able to cast incantless magic. She also has a huge pool of mana thanks to her time training with one of the strongest characters in Mushoku Tensei in Rudeus Greyrat. She enjoys her time making figures with Zanoba, who has become sort of a father figure to the young girl. She even asks him to read her stories at night like a good dad would.

5 Gondo Firebrand

Overlord

Gondo Firebrand is one of the last runesmiths in Overlord. When Ainz Ooal Gown becomes interested in runesmithing, he sets out to find someone who can help him. Ainz and Aura find Gondo, who is understandably scared of Ainz at first. After Ainz shows him his base understanding of runes, Gondo sees the Sorcerer King as a friend. He even leaves his nation to move to the Sorcerer Kingdom and further pursue his rune research.

Rune weapons are some of the strongest in Overlord and Gondo Firebrand is the closest dwarf to making them. He’s an excellent help to Ainz who can provide him with expert insight even before he gives him weapons. With Gondo’s help, Ainz was even able to win over more dwarves from the Dwarven Kingdom that will also research runesmithing. He’s already been a great addition to The Great Tomb of Nazarick, and he hasn’t even made a sword yet.

4 Talhand

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Talhand is the most powerful dwarf in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. His natural affinity for earth and fire magic, coupled with his years of training in wind and water magic, make him a considerable threat to all of his enemies. He was a magical knight in Paul Greyrat’s party, The Fang of the Black Wolf. When Paul found out that his wife Zenith was trapped at the bottom of a labyrinth, Talhand was right beside him the entire time. He even carried Roxy on his back when she was too tired to walk herself out of the labyrinth too.

When the party finally found Zenith, she was trapped inside a Manatite Hydra. Talhand was pivotal in the party’s victory, using his massive Earth Pillar ability to damage the Hydra. He fought from both the back and the front, casting powerful spells to damage the Hydra while also jumping in and tanking damage for Roxy.

3 Dwarf Shaman

Goblin Slayer

Dwarf Shaman breaks one of the few dwarven tropes in Goblin Slayer. Most dwarves hate magic, but Dwarf Shaman embraces it. By using the power of the spirits, Dwarf Shaman can defeat his party’s enemies effectively. Dwarf Shaman is one of the more entertaining characters in Goblin Slayer. A lot of his best abilities come from his love of alcohol, making for some funny moments. When he’s getting ambushed by goblins, he can use his Stupor ability to spray fire wine in their faces to create a distraction.

The Goblin Slayer usually uses the opportunity to light the goblins on fire, killing them brutally. As a shaman, Dwarf Shaman can use the powers of the surrounding earth to create powerful defenses for himself and the rest of the Slayer’s party. He can also use his spirits outside of battle, calling upon the water spirit Undine to steer the party’s boat while they were attacked by goblins.

2 Eisen

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Eisen is the Warrior of the Hero’s Party and was responsible for slaying the Demon King, ending the war at the start of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. He’s an incredibly powerful dwarf who is more than familiar with an ax. Even though Eisen is short in stature, he’s a giant on the battlefield. He flies through enemies at lightning speed and can use his small frame to attack from surprising angles.

When the party reunites 50 years later to look at the meteor shower, Eisen’s still got it. The party, now consisting of a much older Heiter and Himmel, is attacked by a monster on their way to a viewpoint. Eisen doesn’t hesitate to fly toward the beast, hitting it above the head with a rapid strike from his weapon. After a sharply-timed shot from Frieren, the beast is dead and Eisen can go back to enjoying his day.

Gazel Dwargo quickly becomes a good friend to Rimuru Tempest in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. As the leader of the Armed Nation of Dwargon, King Gazel has a lot on his plate. He still chats with his slime friend and even comes to Tempest’s first-ever Festival. When he hears of Tempest’s formation as a nation, he’s wary. He’s not sure how to be friends with a nation of monsters, but he’s willing to try.

One of Gazel’s greatest strengths is his open-mindedness. He was able to see the value in Rimuru and his country well before any other characters in Slime, allowing him to forge an early relationship with the soon-to-be strongest nation in the world. Gazel isn’t just a powerful diplomat, as his Tyrant skill allows him to see through his enemy’s thoughts, making him a formidable force on any battlefield.
