Dungeons & Dragons character Drizzt Do’Urden has been traveling the Forgotten Realms since 1988, and his companions have helped him defeat tyrannous evil through over 40 books. While Drizzt and his scimitars have been the central focus of most of The Legend of Drizzt, this epic series has also spent time diving deep into Drizzt’s enemies, frenemies, and friends, creating a rich tapestry of interlocking storylines. With so many novels, short stories, and graphic novels, it can be hard to ascertain where each character’s story ends.
The powerful drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden was introduced by R.A. Salvatore in The Icewind Dale Trilogy in 1988, coming across the crew he would come to know as the Companions of the Hall. Companions Guenhwyvar, Catti-brie, Wulfgar, and Bruenor Battlehammer would accompany Drizzt through thick and thin, often crossing paths with the grizzled assassin, Artemis Entreri. This cold-hearted enemy was soon to turn into an ally, and the same went for the drow Jarlaxle, Entreri’s on-again, off-again business partner. Through it all, Salvatore created narrative loopholes to enable him to resurrect lost characters, ensuring that many main characters’ stories were never quite over.
10 Zaknafein Do’Urden
Weapons Master Of House Do’Urden
Father of The Legend of Drizzt’s titular star, Zaknafein Do’Urden was explored in The Dark Elf Trilogy, along with his dysfunctional family. Released between 1990 and 1991, this trilogy portrayed Zaknafein’s restrictive life as the oppressed Weapons Master of House Do’Urden. Sacrificed to the spider queen, Lolth, in Menzoberranzan’s matriarchal society, Zak returned as a spirit wraith to hunt his son for shaming the family.

Casting A Drizzt TV Show: 10 Actors Who Would Be Perfect For Dungeons & Dragons’ Dark Elf Hero
Drizzt Do’Urden, the Dark Elf of Dungeons & Dragons fame, is overdue for a TV show or movie, with certain actors seeming suitable for the role.
Regaining control of his body and hurling himself into an acid lake, Zaknafein proved his loyalty to his son. But Zaknafein was not to rest in peace. He said goodbye to Drizzt properly in Passage to Dawn as a peaceful spirit. Moreover, he was brought back to life by Yvonnel Baenre II in Hero, although she wasn’t entirely sure how she did it. Reuniting with Drizzt and Jarlaxle, Zak’s subsequent adventures eventually led him to a new lover, Azudonna, who he was poised to marry at the end of 2023’s Lolth’s Warrior.
9 Tiago Baenre
Powerful Drow Noble Of House Baenre
For a male, Tiago was a powerful noble of House Baenre, allowed certain privileges that other males of his matriarchal culture weren’t. Tiago defeated one of the powerful Dungeons & Dragons monsters that Drizzt fought, Errtu. This proved that he was more than just an evil drow in The Legend of Drizzt. However, Tiago cruelly took Drizzt, Artemis, Dahlia, Ambergris, and Afafrenfere captive in Night of the Hunter, having to confront Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall during their rescue.
Suitably, Tiago died at Drizzt’s hands in Menzoberranzan in
Hero.
Tiago presented a villainous presence again in his assault on Clan Battlehammer in Icewind Dale. In this time, he slayed leader Stokely Silverstream and took lots of Dwarves captive in the Battle of Kelvin’s Cairn. Fortunes and loyalties turned in Salvatore’s winding narrative so that Tiago was finally made Weapons Master of House Do’Urden. But ever since meeting the talented Drizzt, Tiago had been obsessed with beating him. Suitably, Tiago died at Drizzt’s hands in Menzoberranzan in Hero.
8 Jarlaxle Baenre
Leader Of Bregan D’Aerthe Mercenaries
Like Tiago, Jarlaxle was born into the powerful House Baenre but chose a path all his own. Jarlaxle is one of the drow needed in any live-action Legend of Drizzt adaptation, which hasn’t been confirmed but may crop up at some point. Defying Menzoberranzan’s feudal tribes, Jarlaxle set up his mercenary group, Bregan D’aerthe. After numerous cut-throat deals, Jarlaxle found himself traveling with the assassin Artemis Entreri. The chemistry between these two was undeniable, so it was little surprise when Jeremy Crawford confirmed that Jarlaxle was pansexual.
Jarlaxle could easily be D&D’s next queer icon if The Legend of Drizzt were adapted. But Jarlaxle’s bond with Artemis was tragically subverted in Baldur’s Gate when he was forced to betray him. Jarlaxle liberated a whole city and started traveling with Drizzt before bumping into Artemis again, resulting in some seriously awkward conversation. In Rise of the King, Jarlaxle was called back to Menzoberranzan but bribed Gromph to secure his exit, leading him back to Drizzt. From mercenary to explorer and hero, Jarlaxle discovered the Aevendrow in Starlight Enclave, and in 2023’s Lolth’s Warrior, led refugees to safety.
7 Artemis Entreri
Hardened Assassin
Born in Calimshan into horribly difficult circumstances, the assassin Artemis Entreri may have had an even harder childhood than the drow males of The Legend of Drizzt. Growing up around Calimport and hired by Pasha Pook to assassinate Regis as an adult, Artemis ended The Halfling’s Gem even more obsessed with defeating Drizzt than Tiago. Drizzt and Artemis’ dramatic enmity went on to be a huge highlight of The Legend of Drizzt, taking Artemis to Bregan D’aerthe just to see him again. Left for dead but rescued by Jarlaxle, Artemis ended up stuck in Menzoberranzan, finding Drizzt an unlikely ally.
Menzoberranzan is one of the main drow cities of the Underdark, an underground location in the Forgotten Realms.
Escaping Menzoberranzan with Drizzt and Catti-brie made Artemis Drizzt’s best frenemy. Apparently strengthened by the whole ordeal and its results, Artemis returned to Calimport and rose to power somewhat. Over various stories, Artemis went on travels with Jarlaxle, Dahlia, and Effron, but found it hard to forgive Jarlaxle after what looked like a betrayal. But eventually, in 2016’s Maestro, Jarlaxle stopped Artemis from a foolhardy quest to save Drizzt, suggesting a possible reconciliation. Artemis was set on rescuing Dahlia at the end of Lolth’s Warrior, offering sequel material.
6 Regis
The Halfling
Regis was one of Drizzt’s Companions of the Hall right from The Icewind Dale Trilogy, which started in 1988 with The Crystal Shard. In possession of a magical ruby with incredible powers, Regis was being doggedly pursued. Drizzt helped him escape and the two were companions and allies ever since. After the death of Wulfgar, Bruenor Battlehammer’s adopted son, Bruenor was distraught, and Regis heroically took up leadership of Mithral Hall.
By the end of 2023’s
Lolth’s Warrior
, Regis was happy and safe with Drizzt and his friends.
After Regis the halfling’s heroics in Starless Night, his death was particularly tragic. The Spellplague claimed Regis and one other important Companion of the Hall, leaving Drizzt seriously bereaved. However, 2023’s The Sundering provided a surprising twist. This varied series only had one Drizzt-focused book – The Companions saw the goddess Mielikki revive Regis and bring him back to Drizzt. By the end of 2023’s Lolth’s Warrior, Regis was happy and safe with Drizzt and his friends.
5 Wulfgar
The Barbarian
Wulfgar the Barbarian was a child victim of warring tribes, his family attacked by Bruenor Battlehammer and his clan of Dwarves. Bruenor spared Wulfgar and raised him like a son, leading to one of the strongest connections evident in The Legend of Drizzt. Wulfgar’s devastating death in The Legacy was not as final as it seemed. Rather, Wulfgar was taken to the drow goddess, Lolth, who traded him to Errtu, the demonic Balor.
Wulfgar’s simmering romance with Catti-brie was harshly interrupted by this earth-shattering event, leading to Errtu torturing Wulfgar for years on end. Errtu was trying to lure Drizzt’s attention and it worked, resulting in Wulfgar’s escape and Errtu’s defeat and banishment. This wasn’t Wulfgar’s last scrape with death and destruction. But thankfully, he was brought back by Mielikki to help Drizzt, like Regis. By the end of Lolth’s Warrior, Wulfgar had explored his past, seeking his own people, and again, reunited with Drizzt and his friends.
4 Bruenor Battlehammer
King Of Mithral Hall
The King of Mithral Hall is one of the sturdiest Companions of the Hall, accompanying Drizzt on many of his most dangerous adventures. In a backstory obviously inspired by The Hobbit, Bruenor was run out of his ancestral home, Mithral Hall, by a dragon called Shimmergloom. In The Halfling’s Gem, Bruenor showed up to Drizzt and Catt-brie’s battle with pirates just in time to help them. Bruenor’s relationship with Drizzt and Regis only strengthened from The Icewind Dale Trilogy onward.
After faking his own death to seek Gauntlgrym with Drizzt, Bruenor
ended
Lolth’s Warrior
in a good place.
Inevitably, Bruenor finally reclaimed Mithral Hall, with the help of the Companions, who henceforth earned themselves the moniker Companions of the Hall. After much fighting with the Orcs, Bruenor commendably made an alliance with the Orc King. This heroism couldn’t prevent his untimely death. However, like Regis and Wulfgar, Bruenor was resuscitated by Mielikki and went on further journeys with Drizzt. After faking his own death to seek Gauntlgrym with Drizzt, Bruenor ended Lolth’s Warrior happily talking with his friends.
3 Catti-Brie
Bruenor’s Adopted Daughter
The human Catti-brie was Bruenor’s adopted child, like Wulfgar. The parallels between Wulfgar and Catti-brie didn’t stop there – they ended up falling in love. However, they weren’t quite a match, and Catti-brie transferred her affections to Drizzt. Eventually marrying Drizzt after The Orc King, Catti-brie’s sweet, slow-burn love with Drizzt resulted in their child, Brienelle Zaharina.
R.A. Salvatore released
Lolth’s Warrior
in 2023 and
Betwixt Two Worlds,
an audiobook, in October 2024.
At one point, Catti-brie became Alustriel’s apprentice in Silverymoon, training to use magic. She was sadly hit by a strand of the falling Weave and succumbed to the resulting Spellplague. She was revived by Mielikki but with a notably different personality. Nonetheless, Catti-brie ended Lolth’s Warrior on good terms with the Companions, considering helping Artemis find Dahlia. She chatted to Drizzt about their daughter in Betwixt Two Worlds, proving their ongoing support for each other.
2 Guenhwyvar
Astral Panther
Drizzt Do’Urden first encountered Guenhwyvar during his studies in Sorcere. The giant panther lives on the Astral Plane and is tethered to Drizzt’s world by an onyx figurine. Reluctantly controlled by Masoj, Guenhwyvar befriended Drizzt and, impressively, resisted Masoj’s magical command to kill Drizzt. Allied forever after, Guenhwyvar went wherever Drizzt went.

There is a perfect D&D Drizzt Do’Urden TV show waiting in the wings, but one overused Hollywood trope may be key to bringing it to life.
During Siege of Darkness, the Time of Troubles nearly destroyed Guenhwyvar completely. All magic in the realm of Faerûn was endangered by this cataclysmic threat. However, Guenhwyvar survived with Catti-brie’s assistance. Drizzt found himself woefully separated from Guenhwyvar in The Last Threshold. Although Guen was trapped in the Shadowfell, Drizzt was finally able to summon her, and he kept her by his side ever since.
1 Drizzt Do’Urden
Dark Elf
Born and raised in the Underdark’s Menzoberranzan as a noble of House Do’Urden but an inferior male, Drizzt escaped a homicidal family to carve out a new life on the surface. The specters of his past would haunt him, with his father, Zaknafein, pursuing him first as a vengeful wraith and then as a reanimated friend. Drizzt later had to kill his own sister, who had also hunted him down from the Underdark. Drizzt’s sister, Vierna, caused Wulfgar’s death, which wasn’t the last tragedy to strike Drizzt. While defeating foes like Errtu, the Orc King, Tiago Baenre, and the Marilith, Drizzt relied on the Companions of the Hall for support.
Despite managing to make friends of his previous enemies, Artemis and Jarlaxle, nothing could prepare Drizzt for the catastrophic Spellplague. This huge change affected multiple stories in D&D, resulting in Salvatore’s unique Companion. Having lost Regis, and the love of his life, Catti-brie, Drizzt was a haggard drow for a long time. As he lay injured, Drizzt was miraculously joined by the Companions of the Hall, resurrected. Reunited, they kept on defending the Forgotten Realms in Dungeons & Dragons. Drizzt seemed peaceful at the end of Lolth’s Warrior and adorably worried about his daughter in Betwixt Two Worlds.
