Every Star Wars Planet Rich In The Force (& Why)

Summary

  • Planets rich in the Force, called vergences, can be light, dark, or neutral; Jedi and Sith harness their power.
  • Powerful vergences conceal users and hold dark secrets, like Ahch-To’s dark side chamber, or Ambria’s Sith history.
  • The Force vergences on planets like Mustafar, Dagobah, and Ilum have unique histories that influenced the galaxy’s fate.

Star Wars has introduced several planets that are rich in the Force – and here is a guide to every one of them revealed to date. There are some worlds that are called “vergences” in the Force – planets that serve as nexuses of power. Some are rich in the light side of the Force, some in the dark side, and others appear neutral. Over the millennia, Force sects like the Jedi and Sith have learned to harness the power of these vergences.

Many vergences are small, created by the actions of powerful Jedi and Sith, and both light and dark side users have been able to conceal themselves by using a vergence. The most powerful Force vergences occur on worlds rich in the Force, developing for reasons even the Jedi have been unable to discern. This is every world whose Force power has been explored in Star Wars canon – whether in the movies or TV shows, in the books or the canon roleplaying game.

What’s the best way to watch Star Wars? Here’s everything you need to know to watch in release or timeline order, and how to include the TV shows.

Ahch-To

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Location

Unknown Regions

Alignment

Light side, but with a dark side vergence too

Featured prominently in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ahch-To is the home of the first Jedi Temple. It has many names in ancient legends, but its existence has been erased from most star charts, with the Jedi presumably keen to avoid its power being exploited. The Emperor appears to have attempted to search it out – Luke Skywalker discovered it using a compass he took from one of Palpatine’s strongholds – but it has nevertheless remained untainted by the Sith.

That isn’t to suggest Ahch-To is principally devoted to the light side; the early Jedi were servants of balance, embodying the harmony of the light side and the dark. During her time on Ahch-To Rey discovered a mysterious cavern tainted with the dark side, and Luke was shaken when she didn’t even try to resist its siren song. James Mangold’s upcoming Jedo origin movie will hopefully reveal more of Ahch-To’s ancient history.

Aleen

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars Orphne

Location

The Bright Jewel Sector in the Mid Rim

Alignment

Light side

A secluded world, Aleen appears to be a light side equivalent to Dathomir – complete with a race of beings who have found a way to tap into the Force. Star Wars: The Clone Wars introduced one of their number, Orphne, whose use of the Force was as unusual as that of the Nightsisters of Dathomir. Aleen was once site of a Jedi chapter house, although it was abandoned for unknown reasons.

Ambria

Star Wars: The Helmet Collection #2

Darth Bane from Star Wars Legends with red lightsabers behind him

Location

Inner Rim

Alignment

Dark side

In Star Wars Legends, Ambria – an unpleasant desert world in the Inner Rim that’s oddly in tune with the dark side of the Force – was site of the final battle between Darth Bane, founder of the Sith Rule of Two, and his apprentice Darth Zannah. Surprisigly, Ambria is canonized in Star Wars: The Helmet Collection #2, which reveals there are rumors in canon that the same is true. Hopefully Ambria’s real story will one day be told.

Auratera

Star Wars: Force & Destiny – Nexus of Power

Auratera Star Wars

Location

The Vorzyd sector of the Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Light side

The planet Auratera was contested by the Jedi and the Sith for millennia, because it contained a light side vergence so powerful only experts in the Force could safely visit it. The so-called Acablas vergence is surrounded by Jedi and Sith monuments and ruins. Records of Auratera were purposefully erased by the Ithorian Jedi Master Nareen Cale after the death of Darth Bane a thousand years ago, and the Jedi safeguarded its secret until the Clone Wars. Auratera’s inhabitants subsequently tried to erase evidence of their world’s history, fearing the interest of the Empire.

Bardotta

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Jar Jar Binks Kisses Queen Julia of Bardotta in The Clone Wars

Location

Shasos sector of the Colonies

Alignment

Dark side

Briefly seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, at that time Bardotta was ruled by Queen Julia – Jar Jar Binks’ surprising lover. The planet appears to have a long, dark history, and the Nightsisters of Dathomir attempted to unlock its secrets to awaken a monstrous demon known as the Malmourral. The Dagoyan Masters, a different kind of Force users who only passively interact with the Force, attempt to maintain the balance at Bardotta.

Brendok

The Acolyte

Location

The Outer Rim

Alignment

Unclear

Introduced in The Acolyte, Brendok was ravaged by a hyperspace disaster some 200 years before the Skywalker saga. The planet recovered at a phenomenal rate, leading the Jedi to believe it had to be home to a Force vergence, and they sent scouts there to try to track it down. The expedition to Brendok discovered another Force cult, a coven of witches, who had made Brendok their home.

The witches of Brendok seem to have used the Force vergence there for two purposes. Firstly, it helped them remain hidden from the Jedi; there’s abundant evidence both Jedi and Sith used vergences to hide from one another, and the witches clearly did the same. More importantly, though, Mother Aniseya apparently tapped into the power of the Brendok vergence to manipulate the Midi-chlorians, creating Osha and Mae.

Coruscant

Location

Core

Alignment

Dark side

The ecumenopolis that is Coruscant actually appears to be strong in the Force, probably because of the sheer number of beings who have lived on its surface. The power of the Force is centered upon an ancient vergence that was claimed by the Sith millennia ago, and became a shrine to their power. The Jedi claimed the vergence after the Sith had been driven back from Coruscant, and built the Jedi Temple of Coruscant atop the shrine.

Claudia Gray’s novel Into The Dark reveals the Jedi of the High Republic Era had learned to perform a Force ritual that allowed them to purify dark side relics using the vergence. By the time of the prequels, the Jedi had ceased to do this, and instead locked the shrine away. No doubt Palpatine used it for his own sinister purposes.

Dagobah

The Empire Strikes Back

Location

Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Light side, but with a dark side vergence

Dagobah is one of the most powerful vergences of the Force seen in the Star Wars saga. Its verdant swamps contain so much life that the Living Force is stronger on Dagobah than almost anywhere else in the galaxy, and indeed some Force-sensitives find themselves overwhelmed when they set foot on the planet. Qui-Gon Jinn drew Master Yoda to Dagobah to begin his training to live on after death in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and he found himself caught up in a wellspring of the Living Force. He returned to Dagobah during his exile, continuing his training there.

One of the most sinister features on Dagobah is a cave that is steeped in the dark side of the Force. Luke Skywalker entered the cave in The Empire Strikes Back, where he saw a vision of himself as Darth Vader. Years later, Supreme Leader Snoke took Kylo Ren to Dagobah as part of his own training, and Kylo Ren destroyed the cave in a fit of rage.

Dathomir

Location

The Quelli sector of the Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Dark side

The planet Dathomir is a powerful nexus of dark side energy, and it is home to the powerful Nightsisters of Dathomir. The dark side manifests in an unusual form on Dathomir, and it is tied to the resurrection magick of the Nightsisters, whose powers have long been coveted by the Sith. The Emperor attempted to commit genocide against the Nightsisters, but Ahsoka revealed he had failed; it saw three new Nightsister Great Mothers return to Dathomir from the distant planet Peridea, and most viewers expect them to resurrect their race.

Devaron

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

A comic panel depicting the Temple of Eedit on the planet Devaron. The text reads, "Take us back to the planet Devaron. I need to know what's down there."

Location

The Devaron sector of the Colonies

Alignment

Light side

The forested world of Devaron – homeworld of the well-established Devaronian race – is site of a powerful light side vergence. The Jedi Temple of Eedit was built around this vergence, deep in the jungle, and it became a place for learning and meditation. It was destroyed during the Clone Wars.

Exegol

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Location

Unknown Regions

Alignment

Dark side

Introduced in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Exegol is a unique vergence in the Force where “the veil between life and death [is] thin. The Sith have always sought to conquer death, and as such many of their number have sought their way to Exegol. The Emperor appears to have sensed the existence of Exegol when he was at the height of his power, with Chuck Wendig’s novel Aftermath: Empire’s End describing him becoming aware of “some origin of the Force, some dark presence formed of malevolent substance.

The Sith Eternal cultists were able to resurrect Palpatine at Exegol, but according to The Star Wars Book he was unable to leave the planet without finding a satisfactory host for his spirit rather than a mere clone body. Rae Carson’s novelization of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hints there are other Jedi and Sith worlds hidden in the Unknown Regions, likely also Force vergences. It remains to be seen whether any others will be as dangerous as Exegol.

Iktotch

Star Wars: Force & Destiny – Nexus of Power

Star Wars Iktotch

Location

Expansion Region

Alignment

Presumably light side

An inhospitable, storm-swept world, Iktotch is believed to be home to a massive Force vergence – the reason the native Iktotchi have developed precognitive powers that allow them to navigate their world’s storms. Many Iktotchi have become Jedi seers, while others are skilled navigators – often helping find other Force vergences. The Empire blockaded Iktotch, fearing the precognitive visions of the Iktotchi.

Ilum

Ilum Jedi: Fallen Order

Location

Unknown Regions

Alignment

Light side

A snow-covered planet in the Unknown Regions, Ilum was a frigid and inhospitable world noted for its rich deposits of kyber crystals. According to Star Wars: Complete Locations, it was discovered millennia ago, shortly after the founding of the Jedi Order on Ahch-To. The Jedi considered Ilum one of their holiest sites, establishing a Jedi Temple there in its defense and maintaining the highest secrecy about Ilum’s location. The Empire discovered Ilum within a year of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and began the process of constructing it into an Imperial superweapon – Starkiller Base.

The Living Sea of Gazian

Star Wars #20

Star Wars Living Sea of Gazian

Location

Mid Rim

Alignment

Light side

Introduced in Charles Soule and Marco Castiello’s Star Wars #20, the Living Sea of Gazian is a remarkable Force planet. Situated in the Mid-Rim, the entire planet is a gigantic living organism, its surface coated in strange mushroom-like growths. The Living Sea takes an imprint of the minds of any beings who visit it, and in the past Jedi have traveled to Gazian to learn from the wisdom of their forerunners. Some Jedi visit for a while and then move on, while others appear to have stayed on Gazian until they died, utterly absorbed in the secrets they discovered.

Lothal

Star Wars Rebels

Location

Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Light side

Featured prominently in Star Wars Rebels, Lothal appears to be a light side nexus that was venerated by the Jedi. They built a Jedi Temple at the heart of the vergence, a location from which it is possible to access a mystical realm called the World Between the Worlds. The animal life on Lothal is unusual in that several unique species are able to access the Force, most notably the Loth-Wolves, who serve as guardians of the vergence. Jedi Ezra Bridger possessed a strong bond with the Force vergence on Lothal, and through it to the Loth-Wolves themselves.

Malachor

Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels Malachor

Location

Outer Rim

Alignment

Dark side

The mysterious planet Malachor is an Outer Rim world that played a key role in Star Wars Rebels season 2. It was the site of a horrific battle between the ancient Sith and the Jedi, a conflict brought to an end with the triggering of a destructive superweapon. The Jedi considered Malachor off-limits, perhaps feeling the dark side was too strong and there was too great a risk any Jedi who went there would fall to the dark side. Darth Maul traveled to Malachor during the Dark Times, attempting to enter the Sith Temple in order to steal the superweapon.

Moraband

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars Korriban Moraband

Location

Outer Rim

Alignment

Dark side

The ancient homeworld of the Sith, Moraband is rich in the dark side of the Force. It appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with Yoda visiting the desolate world as part of his quest to learn the secret of life after death. There, he discovered a desolate world steeped in the dark side, haunted by Sith spirits.

Moraband is dominated by the Valley of the Dark Lords, which contains numerous monuments that serve as crypts for the ancient Lords of the Sith. One such tomb contains the spirit of Darth Bane, founder of the Rule of Two. In the old Expanded Universe, the planet was called Korriban, and Lucasfilm has confirmed that is indeed an old name for Moraband. Curiously, Palpatine himself never visited Moraband, meaning there could yet be secrets of the Sith concealed there that even the Emperor did not know.

Mortis

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Mortis Tower in Clone Wars Season 3

Location

Unknown

Alignment

Unknown, possibly balance

Mortis is perhaps the most powerful vergence in the Force, and some believe it is the origin of the Force itself. This world exists outside the known universe, a realm that is in constant flux, and that can never be visited at will — it summons any visitors. As revealed in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Mortis is inhabited by three living beings, who each represent an aspect of the Force. Son stands for the dark side, Daughter for the light, and Father holds them in balance. As the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker was drawn to Mortis to be tested.

Mustafar

Location

The Atravis Sector of the Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Dark side

Site of Darth Vader’s legendary castle, Mustafar has a troubled history. As revealed in the Vader Immortal game, it was once a planet rich in life — until it was visited by the Sith. The Mustafarians drove the Sith back, but at a terrible cost, for their ruler Lady Corvax lost her husband during the battle. Torn with grief, she used a massive kyber crystal called the Brightstar to attempt to resurrect him, a Force ritual that backfired and transformed the entire planet into a volcanic wasteland. Lady Corvax’s madness created a powerful dark side nexus.

During the Clone Wars, Darth Sidious exposed Force-sensitive children to the dark side on Mustafar, aiming to turn them into his own ruthless agents. The fiery planet became the site of the fateful battle between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Skywalker transformed into Darth Vader. The Sith Lord settled on the planet, where he attempted to find a way to use the Brightstar to restore his beloved Padmé. His attempt failed, and the curse of Lady Corvax was lifted, meaning Mustafar is now gradually healing.

Naboo

Location

The Chommell Sector of the Mid Rim

Alignment

Presumably light side

The beautiful waterworld ruled by Queen Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Naboo is also the homeworld of Emperor Palpatine himself. Naboo is identified as a Force vergence in the Star Wars: Force & Destiny sourcebook Nexus of Power, likely a result of its abundant life. Curiously, the Force vergence found on Naboo has never been explored in Star Wars canon, meaning Naboo remains a mystery even now.

Ossus

Lukes Skywalkers Jedi Temple

Location

The Adega System of the Outer Rim Territories

Alignment

Light side

Luke Skywalker built his Jedi Temple on Ossus, homeworld of the Jedi Order itself in Star Wars Legends. Ossus is a remote planet, rich in the Force, and Luke presumably rediscovered it while seeking out the history of the Jedi Order. Luke’s Jedi Temple was eventually destroyed, with Kylo Ren taking the blame even though the deed seems to have been done remotely by Palpatine himself – with the Emperor likely tapping into the power of Ossus’ vergence to create a Force storm.

Planet X

Star Wars: The High Republic

Marchion Ro and Planet X

Location

Wild Space

Alignment

Unknown

Little is known about the living world known as Planet X, situated somewhere in Wild Space. This is the homeworld of the Nameless, mysterious Force predators that plagued the galaxy during the High Republic Era after they were retrieved by space pirates known as the Nihil. The fate of Planet X is yet to be revealed, but there have been hints Star Wars: The High Republic will end with a Nameless Purge, which likely means it will become a battlefield.

Tython

The Mandalorian

Star Wars Tython

Location

Deep Core

Alignment

Light side

The Mandalorian introduced viewers to Tython, another ancient Jedi world – with a Force vergence that Grogu used to reach out across the galaxy and search for a Jedi Master. Situated in the Deep Core, Tython has long been considered sacred to the Jedi. In Legends, it was one of the contenders for the Jedi homeworld.

Weik

Star Wars: Force & Destiny – Nexus of Power

Star Wars Weik

Location

Wild Space

Alignment

Dark side

According to the Star Wars: Force & Destiny sourcebook Nexus of Power, Weik is an untamed wilderness world found in Wild Space. “The Force flows strongly among the mountains, forests, and fords of Weik,” the sourcebook notes. “Those with the ability to sense it claim that it flows like rivers across the world.” The dark side is not strong on Weik, but it is pervasive, a bitter flavor that a Force user can always sense. The shamans of Weik claim it is because of the planet’s untamed nature.

The Wellspring of Life

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars Wellspring of Life

Location

Unknown

Alignment

Light side

The final vergence in the Force is the so-called Wellspring of Life, sometimes referred to simply as the Force Planet. Surrounded by a nebula, this world does not appear on any star chart, and it is possible it cannot be found by any who are thrall to the dark side. Master Yoda discovered the Wellspring of Life during his quest for immortality and was shaken to the core by the experience. A Force Priestess told Yoda the Wellspring of Life is “the foundation of life, the birthplace of what your science calls midi-chlorians, the foundation of what connects the Living Force and the Cosmic Force.
