India’s ace para shuttlers Sukant Kadam and Suhas Yathiraj have ensured at least one medal for the country in the ongoing Paris Paralympic Games 2024. Both shuttlers are competing in the men’s singles SL4 category. Sukant advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday (August 31) after topping the group stage, confirming at least one medal for India in this event.

How is the medal assured with semi-final spots?

Since both Sukant and Suhas are competing in the same event, they will face each other in the semi-finals. This means if one loses, the other will win and go on to play for the gold, thus assuring India of at least a silver medal. There is also a chance for India to get two medals, as the one who loses in the semi-finals can compete in the bronze medal match.

The semi-finals are scheduled for September 1 (Sunday), where the colour and number of medals for India (one or two) will be decided.

Sukant and Suhas shine in group stages

Sukant Kadam defeated Thailand’s Teamarrom Siripong 21-12, 21-12 in his second Group B match, securing the top spot in his group. Suhas Yathiraj, who won a silver at the Tokyo Paralympics, had already topped Group A, securing his place in the semi-finals.

Nitesh Kumar advances in the SL3 category

In the men’s singles SL3 category, Nitesh Kumar also qualified for the semi-finals. He defeated Mongkhon Bunsun of Thailand 21-13, 21-14, marking his third consecutive win and topping Group A.

Mandeep Kaur enters women’s singles quarter-finals

In the women’s singles SL3 category, Mandeep Kaur reached the quarter-finals after defeating Australia’s Vinot Celine Aurelie. Mandeep finished second in her group with one win and one loss, having lost her opening match to Nigeria’s Bolaji Mariam.
