“I’m Ashamed of Sir Keir Starmer,” Says Rebel MP as Row Over Justice Reforms Escalates
A Labour MP leading a rebellion against plans to hold trials without juries has said he is “ashamed” of former lawyer Sir Keir Starmer. Karl Turner, also a lawyer, described Justice Secretary David Lammy as “lazy.”

Labour MP Criticizes ‘Lazy’ Trial Plans
Ministers have confirmed that individuals already awaiting trial may lose their right to have their case heard by a jury-marking a significant escalation in the battle over the future of the justice system.
Just weeks after Justice Secretary David Lammy stated that the measures would not be applied retroactively, Courts Minister Sarah Sackman has doubled down on the reforms.
She said that where a trial date has not yet been set, “you want these measures to take effect immediately so they can reduce the backlog.”
This move is likely to fuel the ongoing controversy over the changes, with the Bar Council arguing that it could violate a fundamental legal principle and may face legal challenges.
Mr. Lammy and his team propose that, if approved by MPs and the House of Lords, nearly all crimes carrying a sentence of up to three years in prison will soon be tried by a single judge alone-with no option for a jury trial.
David Lammy Announces Jury Trial Reforms
In one of the strongest criticisms by a mainstream Labour MP against the party leadership in years, Karl Turner, the lawyer leading the rebellion, said he is “ashamed” of Sir Keir Starmer, called Mr. Lammy “lazy,” and told Sky News that the government needs to realize that he and his colleagues might eventually leave the House of Commons.
According to the Hull MP, “at least 60” Labour colleagues are also willing to rebel against the plans, reaching a point where “it’s not difficult for five more, ten more, or fifteen more to join because there is safety in numbers.”
