El presidente de la Federación de Lucha Libre de la India (WFI), Sanjay Singh, ha hecho un llamamiento para mantener la lucha libre como deporte para los Juegos de la Commonwealth de 2026.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh has appealed to the Commonwealth Group Federation (CGF) to ensure wrestling is retained as a sport in the Commonwealth Games. The next edition of the Games is set to take place in 2026. Singh claimed that the hosts – Scotland – might not be interested to keep the sport as a part of the event. CWG 2026 will be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
‘Retain wrestling in Commonwealth Games’
WFI president Sanjay Singh met CGF president Chirs Jenkins and explained to him why wrestling was important to be included in CWG for India and many other countries. As per PTI, he informed that the final decision on the matter will be taken by Scotland. He added that the sport wasn’t popular in the UK, Scotland and England and hence there were less chances of the sport being retained in the event.
“I met CGF President Chris Jenkins and CGF CEO Katie Sadleir during NSFs (National Sports Federations) meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation. We told them how important it is for India and several other nations to have wrestling on the CWG roster. They said that Scotland will have a final say,” Singh told PTI.

The last time wrestling wasn’t a part of CWG was in 2006 when it was replaced by basketball. India has tasted enormous success in the sport at the Commonwealth Games, having secured 114 medals till 2022. India won 12 medals in wrestling in the last edition of the event in 2022. Six out of the 22 gold medals secured by India in Birmingham came from wrestling.
