Dhaka: Voting has officially ended in Bangladesh’s 13th general election, and the counting of votes has begun. This election is being seen as a major turning point in the country’s political history, with the main contest between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to political observers, BNP leader Tarique Rahman has emerged as a strong candidate for the position of prime minister. Various public opinion surveys suggest he is ahead in the race. However, the Jamaat-led alliance, headed by Shafiqur Rahman, could still deliver unexpected results.
The alliance includes several parties, among them the National Citizen Party (NCP). The NCP was formed by student leaders who played a key role in the 2024 uprising. Because of this background, a large number of young voters appear to be supporting the alliance.
Polling across the country was largely peaceful. The Election Commission stated that the vote-counting process is ongoing in a transparent manner. Unofficial and preliminary results have started to come in, while the final official results will be announced in phases.
