Caracas, Venezuela – CNN reporters witnessed several explosions in Caracas on Saturday morning, with residents reporting power outages in parts of the city. The cause of the blasts remains unclear.
The first explosion was recorded around 1:50 AM local time (12:50 AM ET). “One explosion was so intense it shook my windows afterward,” said CNN en Español correspondent Osmary Hernández.
Power was cut in several neighborhoods of the Venezuelan capital, and CNN journalists on the ground could hear the sounds of low-flying aircraft following the explosions.
Video obtained and verified by CNN shows two plumes of smoke rising into the night sky above the city’s lights, with an orange glow visible at the base of one plume. A brief flash is seen in another location, followed by the sound of a dull explosion.
Venezuelan news outlets Efecto Cocuyo and Tal Cual Digital reported that explosions were also heard in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas, and in the coastal city of Higuerote in Miranda state.
Smoke was later seen rising near La Carlota Airport.
This incident comes amid repeated warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump that America is preparing new actions against alleged drug smuggling networks in Venezuela and that “ground attacks” will begin “soon.” In October, Trump stated he had authorized the CIA to operate inside the South American country to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs.
