Iran’s judiciary stated that the group was involved in organizing and leading activities aimed at destabilizing the political and social situation of the country at a time when Iran was facing military threats from the US and Israel. Authorities also accused them of attempting to justify violent actions carried out during the unrest.
Iran’s Reform Front confirmed the arrests, saying that Azar Mansouri was detained from her home under a judicial order. The group added that other senior members have also been summoned by security authorities.
The arrests follow widespread protests in January that initially began over a worsening economic crisis but later turned into a nationwide anti-government movement. Iranian officials described the protests as foreign-backed unrest and blamed external interference for the violence.
The government reported that thousands of people were killed and many others arrested during the protests, while human rights organizations have disputed the official figures and accused state forces of excessive use of force.
The crackdown has further heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. Despite this, indirect talks between Tehran and Washington are ongoing, with another round of negotiations expected in the coming days.
