We’ve all been guilty of creating embarrassing email addresses at least once in our lives. Having to share these email IDs in a professional setting doesn’t feel great, and creating a new address means managing yet another inbox.
Google appears to be preparing a long-awaited solution for this issue, one that would allow users to change their email address without losing access to existing emails, files, or Google services.
This change was first spotted by users in the Google Pixel Hub group on Telegram and later reported by 9to5Google. A Hindi version of the Gmail support website states that Google is “gradually rolling out to all users” the ability to change the email address linked to a Google account. This includes switching from an existing Gmail address to a new one that also ends in “@gmail.com.“
The Old Address Will Still Work
According to the support page, users who change their Gmail address will still retain access to their old address, which will function as an alias. Emails sent to the old address will continue to arrive, and users will be able to sign in to Google services using either the new or old Gmail address.
However, there is a limitation. After making the change, users will not be allowed to create any additional Gmail addresses tied to the same account for 12 months.
As of Sunday afternoon, the English-language version of Google’s Gmail support site has not yet been updated to reflect this change. It still states that Gmail addresses ending in “@gmail.com” usually cannot be changed. Instead, it advises users to either update the name associated with their email address or create a new account and manually transfer emails and contacts.
Google has not officially announced the feature or confirmed when it will become widely available. The wording on the Hindi support page suggests a phased rollout, meaning availability may vary by region and account type.
